Maintenance on the 4V Ducs is a bit more expensive. Depends on how much he rides it, of course, but figure that any significant service will run you close to $1K, every year or two.
What you'd mainly be looking for is that it (a) has been broken in decently (so far) and not abused, and (b) has all the keys and security bits. There should be a red key and two black ones. Particularly if the red key is missing, that's trouble.
If it was me, I'd want to know why only 500 miles in three years.
This bike is NOT good for all levels. It is a very sharp sportbike, with lots of power and very responsive handling. It would make a very poor first bike, and I really wouldn't recommend one as even a second bike. It is intended for experts. The upside is that there is no reason anyone would ever "outgrow" it.
If he really wants a Ducati, and is pretty new to this, I'd strongly suggest starting with a smaller Monster, like a 620 or 750. That is a very sweet bike, yet is manageable, and will give him a good introduction to Ducati ownership without being too finicky.
