Looking at getting a 749S as a first bike. The only bikes I have really riden are dirt bikes. I rode my dad's harley for a short time. Is this a good idea or not? I dont want to get a bike and turn around 2 months later and want something bigger or better.
I dunno it depends. There was a kid in my MSF who had a 748 as his first bike. he seemed alright. It all depends on your motorcycle proficiency i think. Only time will tell if he made the right decision or not
also in my opinion going straight to a ducati is not a good idea. Ducatis are enthusiats bies (my dad has shit loads of them), and the 749 is definitely not a beginners bike. why dont you try something cheaper that you can get comfortable and confident on first. A ducati sports bike its a hell of alot different to a harley or a dirt bike....

Not just no, but a resounding "hell no."
You're only fooling yourself if you think that you can outride a Ducati 749S within 2 months of starting to ride on the street. That motorcycle can outride most amateur and semi-pro racers, nevermind a complete newbie. If you want something bigger two months after that, you'll just have even more bike that you have no clue how to actually utilize.
The 749S is an amazingly capable motorcycle. It's a track weapon; that's about all. If you don't have a track near, or don't ever ride one, 90% of its ability will go to waste.

But i'll be totally honest: most the time when someone is talking about getting a japanese 600 as a first bike with no experience, i'm like: "take it easy, get some frame sliders, don't do anything stupid... not the best choice, but you could have done worse"
THIS is the "worse" i'd be referring to.
This is something else entirely. It's just crazy-stupid.

Yes I have to agree with everybody else. You will not be able to handle it or ride it anywere near the potential it has. As a newb you are bound to make a mistake. And all your mistakes are multiplied by three on that bike. It is the most responsive bike I have ever ridden. It reacts drasctically to any control input and weight transfer that I give it.
