Default Ducati designations 749R or 749S info

A friend of mine is determined to pick up a Ducati as his first bike, and the 749 seems to be more reasonably priced(used) than the other models. I found a few for around $4000 USD, which is much lower than a good F4I or R6. So, is the 749 kind of like a YZF600R or something? I know nothing about Ducatis and would like to be able to relay good advice to him, since my logical approach in regards to buying a slightly older Japanese bike does not seem to be working. I own an 02 955i that I keep in almost showroom condition, but I spend 90% of my time on my 93 900RR stuntbike.

A brief overview of upside/downside to each bike would be great, and thanks in advance.

$4000 is way too low unless it is a salvage title or wrecked. The 749 only got the Superbike/Testastretta designation in '03. Even one with a lot of miles would still go for around $7500-$8000. Sounds like a scam!!

Oh, yeah- the difference between the R and S is pretty significant. Engine and suspension upgrades to the tune of about $5k or so.
