what i do is put my foot under the shifter, clutch up first gear and bring it up nice and high. i put some pressure on the shifter once i got it up nice and high, roll off the throttle for a split second and it'll click to 2nd, then continue on. be careful, sometimes when you catch 2nd the front wheel comes up higher, so cover that back brake.

yes no clutch. it just takes some practice, but its not hard. make sure you got that front wheel up pretty high or it'll just drop when you shift.

If u have a 600R and not the R6....2nd gear is garbage. There has been a lot of complaints on 2nd gear going out on em, even ppl contacting Yamaha. It may not be you.

shifter are great until you hit them at the wrong time, like in a highchair or spreader.
You have to be all the way up at the balance point to shift to 2nd. 1st to 2nd it the hardest 2nd to 3rd and so on is easy. You might want to try adjusting your shifter down more. That will help alot, it will let you have more leverage!!!

Don't try to shift in a wheelie until you have them on lock and can use the clutch. Otherwise, you will put your tranny and forkseals through hell.
I flipped my shifter arm thingy upside down, and i really like that for shifting in a wheelie. From a staggered standup, i just step forward to the front peg, pull in the clutch, tap the shifter, then let out the clutch, step back to the rear peg and continue on.

To revive an older topic, but ask nearly the same question

I don't bother with first gear wheelies. I wanna get better and second and third gear. I can bring her up easy in second. Is it the same technique with the shift to 3rd? I know I have an odd bike for it, but I just LIKE the wheelies so much. It's just tough at a highway speed to get anything worthwhile for an extended distance, I need to shift, but worry slightly about a surge in torque.

Why dont you worry about BP instead of shifting?

I can get it to balance in second, or at least damned close consistently. However, for that, I'm usually starting around 40mph. I don't like dropping down to 40 on the highway. If I start the wheelie at 65, it's usually banging off the rev limiter by the time I'm at the BP. (BTW, this is not on the 954, this is on my ZRX).

Also, I'm not doing stand up wheelies, and I'm a bigger guy. That's what I got for you.
