Default yzf600 wheelie question

well i asked this in the yzf600 forum but thats dead as hell so i thought I would post it here. I have a 97 yzf600 w/ vance and hines ss2 and So far i attempted a few wheelies. It powered up going up a slight incline but I dont think it has the balls to do it on the flat. I felt like being a dumbass one day and was revving the engine at like 5mph and dumped the clutch, it came up alright just a bit more than i was planning on. From that point on Ive been really timid just revving to 7k and dumping it, it pops up a foot or so and comes back down. I havn't tried standing on the rear peg yet cuz im worried that is the method that will result in me wrecking so im waiting on sliders for that. So any advice is helpful especially if youve ridden/owned one before...thanks

I have a 2003 Im not sure how much has changed between 97 and 03 but I had no problems clutching it in 1st and 2nd I never really did get too far when I powered it unless I bounced it. Try putting your left foot on the pass peg and keep the right one covering the rear brake. When I was learinng that helped get it up a bit easier because most of my weight was towards the back. You probably need to let it rev a bit higher as before dumping the clutch. This will bring you up closer to the balance point. There are also a good sticky on here for learning wheelies and some other good threads you might wanna check those out too. Everybody learns differently you just have to do what feels most comfortable to you and keep practicing.

shouldn't be dumping the clutch... you want to release the clutch fast but smooth, that way you have a little more control over how fast the front end comes up.

yes dont rev up and dump the clutch. get moving in first gear, i dont know 20 or 30mph or so and slip/fan the clutch quickly(but smoothly) while staying on the throttle. if it doesnt come up, increase throttle. it's kind of hard to explain, its best to just experiment and find what works for you and your bike. keep practicing, you'll get it

+1 When I was learning on the yzf600 I didnt really know the right techniques I pretty much taught myself. At the time I really didnt care about balancing the wheelie I just wanted to get it up any way that I could. I didnt stop doing it that way until I showed a buddy of mine what I was doing. And when I said rev i guess i was just using your words what I meant was when you slip/fan the clutch give it a lil more throttle and it would come right up. I think that clears up all the grammatical errors.

I know the tecnique to pop and maintain a wheelie, but can't do them. That's correct...

The reason is a combination of nerves and a bike that's less-than-desireable for stunting. '03 Katana...

Although, if I learn to clutch it up on the Kat I should be able to do it easily on a true SS when I finally get one (next summer). Honestly I think a bike that's hard to put a wheel in the air with is perfect for learning them since your tecnique has got to be perfect to get it to work.

tried a couple today and it came up a foot and a half or so using the fanning the clutch out method i guess i just need to keep practicing. While the bike was on the kickstand i sat with my foot on the rear left footpeg and damn that felt weird i couldnt imagine doin it on one wheel. Also how much will dropping tire pressure help?

Just in case cover the rear brake...and remember, it will bring u down.

There is no reason u should loop a wheelie. Take ur time and practice practice.

lowering the pressure will help keep em stable, but its not gonna do shit for you if you cant get that wheel up
