Leaning heavy on the sport side of the "sport-touring" scales, the Sprint is still the dexterous handler we remember. Showa suspension components make a solid, stable base - although the preload-adjustable 43mm fork contrasts the more adaptable units found on its 1050 siblings. But the stock settings on our machine suit our tastes and the curvy sections of 441 are a pleasant point and shoot affair, with the Sprint's able motor and deft handling making us long for a potential faceoff with the 2008 Super Sport-Touring winning Yamaha FJR...

With the votes tallied and the opinions in, it's the Aprilia that comes out on top here. The remaining bikes are let down by details that shouldn't even be an issue considering what each bike costs. The BMW has an excuse because it's definitely the touring bike of the group. Still, the brakes could be better sorted, and more steam wouldn't hurt. The Ducati, for all its top-notch equipment, should be an easy winner but is hampered by its brakes, unsorted handling and rattly, inconsistent clutch. The Honda needs more torque for serious sport-touring, and the Triumph needs better suspension and brakes.

They did a great job. It is nice luggage, easy to use, seals up tight and holds its shape. Well done. The floating dumbbell thing mounted to the bike under the tailsection that allows the bags to shift slightly side-to-side on their main attachment points remains, as Triumph says it has found this makes the bike more stable while cornering with a load.

To be fair, I only took the VFR800 out for less than an hour*. In my humble estimation, the ST is the superior bike. The ST is more solid, has better traction and low-end grunt, handles better in those country-road curves where shoals of sand and gravel accumulate as well as in bumper-to-bumper traffic, and has less vibration. The ST has more character - hard to define but it simply seems to ride better. And it has a better exhaust note (but this can be changed). That being said, the VFR800FI is hot, fast, handles well, has better brakes and costs several thousand dollars less than the ST.

In terms of power delivery and handling, the Sprint feels much like a typical inline-four. Two details are notably different: First is vibration; not in a bothersome, high-frequency, finger-tingling sort of way, but rather a coarse buzz. And second, the distinctive exhaust note, which changes from a menacing rottweiler growl at low revs to a coyote howl near redline. So you could say it has the bark to go with its bite.

Calling the Sprint's throttle abrupt may be a skosh harsh, but it could be smoother. The Sprint's choppy sensation continues on deceleration as well, but we couldn't get too upset at that fact, as one of the most lovable traits about the ST occurs when the throttle is let off and you can hear the burbling backbeat of the Triple.

On top of its light feel, the Sprint's sporty nature is aided by a 57.4-inch wheelbase and 24-degree rake. Compared side-by-side, the Sprint's geometry reads closer to a superbike than larger sport-tourers like the Yamaha FJR1300 or BMW K1200GT.
