I know there have been some threads circling around here regarding the home run record, but i wanted to start one specifically relating to the man himself, Barry Bonds.
frankly, im getting quite sick of this shit that i read on MSN sports after every fuckin news story regarding anything remotely related to steroids. Marion Jones gets her Olympic medals stripped? lets rip on barry bonds about it too....
i have many many feelings on the subject, so i thought id open it up to discussion.
my feeling is that a lot of you have a bad taste in their mouth about Bonds, so instead of having to sign up for an account on MSN, i can just argue with you guys about it here
i'll be honest, as a huge Bonds fan, i would have rather seen him not get into this whole ordeal. Regardless of the truth behind it (whatever that may be), i wish he had never gotten involved because it is hard to back someone up with all these allegations. you want to believe in him, you want to defend him, but the fact is that i really dont want to.....i would have prefered this never happened.
but let me say this: ive found that most Bonds-haters simply ignore everything he has ever accomplished before this whole scandal. its like it never happened. BULLSHIT! How many gold gloves did he get before? how many homers did he hit? how many stolen bases? how many RBIs? how many MVP awards? the list goes on and on.
and, a small bit of missing info, steroids, technically, werent illegal in MLB when these allegations circulated. and on top of that, he has never failed a drug test.
so i ask you: why you gotta hate?!

Ok, playing devils advocate here.
Just because he got all those awards, stats before he was accussed doesn't mean he may have not been juicing before hand. I think that is why folks don't hold any of his stats as valid. We really do not know when he started taking them to enhance his performance.
And honestly, the "technically not illegal" is a rather weak defense. He cheated his body. And i'm sure with the money he makes, he knows WELL in advance when his number comes up to be pissed test.

Now, as far as his accomplishments go...I think he's a Hall of Famer, regardless of his juicing. I believe he would have been a Hall of Famer even if he HADN'T juiced. He was an EXCELLENT ball player before he started with the roids. He played well, hit well, ran well, and was just all around GOOD.
What his problem was, and still is, is his ego. He saw the props that McGwire and Sosa were getting for hitting all those deep balls, and he got angry that nobody was giving him props based on his actual abilities. He realized that the only way he was going to get into the lime light was to start going yard all the time...so he turned to his only option.
Was it right?? No, but it got him the recognition that he wanted.
With that said, I acknowledge the man's abilities and I DO NOT think that there should be any "asterisk" next to his accomplishments. I still don't like him as a person. From what I have seen, read, and just generally "gotten" is that he is a prick in person and that he is all about himself and nothing else.

i still think it tarnishes his rep being accused of taking his steroids. You but a doubt into anyones mind that his stats may be ruined because of his steroid use then his stats don't mean anything to most folks
