Default Predator Hunters rejoice

I don't know how many SBN members are hunters, but it's the thing I like doing ALMOST as much as riding....

Some of you already know, but if you dont- give predator hunting a try. Coyote can be found everywhere in the US and are a blast to shoot. Most states only require a small game license to hunt coyote, and some states like Wyoming don't require ANY LICENSE at all- even for out of state hunters!!!
I called their Fish and Game dept to confirm that and I was told- "Just come shoot them".......that's a direct quote.
You may need a furbearer license for fox and bobcat. I have mine for CO because we have alot of fox too and they come to the same calls.

The reason I said we rejoice is that in most states, coyote hunting is open year round, with no limits. They are considered varmits and are becoming a big problem in some areas.
So while deer hunters are sitting around in the nicer summer weather, and duck hunters are 4 months from dusting off their calls- we predator hunters are using our hunting time for coyotes to scout turkey spots, likely deer paths.
And keeping our shooting skills up.

Fur prices aren't what they once were, so it sure ain't about the money. Fox is okay and you can probably get decent dollar for a good bobcat pelt.

but it's not equipment intensive. Any .223 or .22-250 (what I use) works and more often than not- a shotgun is just as good, and more fun. You can use any deer rifle, but forget the pelt if you do.
The gun, good camo and a couple calls is all it takes.
Coyote is my favorite hunting so I have more crap. An electronic call (one of the few kinds of hunting that allows electronics) dedicated carrying rig, etc. I bought my .22-250 just for predator hunting.
When rifles are not allowed I carry my 870 express with number four buckshot. I use the same super tight choke I use for turkey.

but mostly- I WAS HUNTING TWO DAYS AGO. Didn't call anything into shooting range, but hey- that's hunting. Still- I got to go when no one else is hunting. And I located a couple hot spots I'll be back in come fall turkey season.....using the same gun just with different shells.

back when I was a teenager, and fur prices were higher, I used to skip school on a friday- head up around Wilton, NH and shoot a coyote or two, then sell them (I didn't even have to skin them out) to a guy in town- and have money to buy a bag of weed for the weekend.....ah those were the days.

I quit hunting deer but I will go out and hunt ground hog, Fox, and some others. Hunting in Pa is getting worse and worse every year. The deer are out there but not like they once were.

Hunting in Colorado, as you can imagine, is pretty much a dream. Two of the duck flyways run through Colorado. The game ranges from squirrel up to moose and bear. Shoot at close range or across a valley.

But I'm a cripple. My legs are beat to shit and I can't climb up after mountain goats. I look for flatter terrain hunting. Birds and small game. Alot of predator hunting. Duck.
I really need to get a quad- because I can get a special hunting license so I can use a quad where others can't....

I live literally down the street from Ft Carson, so I hunt on the training areas out there most of the time. It's a HUGE expanse of varied terrain. Whatever areas aren't being used for training get opened to hunters. Sometimes if there is training nearby you get limited to shotgun, but that's not usually a problem.
I like that because I don't have to drive 5 hours to hunt.

The only problem with CO is that pretty much everything east of the Rockies is privately owned farm land. So you need to bang on doors to get permission to hunt. Some farmers charge a fee.

There are some restrictions on muzzleloading here, but nothing like PA! I can't believe how restrictive it is there. Very much traditional, but round ball?
Here you can't use sabot (although Powerbelt ammo is legal) or mount a scope or use pellet powders. But other than that we're pretty modern.

Can't use crossbows during any archery season. I was looking to get a crossbow but only if I can ue it in archery season.

I would love to hunt in CO. Pa is way to restrictive to have much fun it's more like luck if you get anything not skill. I see a bunch of deer I can get a good shoot on but the restrictions stop me from taking shoots. I don't always have time to count points on a buck and that time lost can cause you to miss a shoot you could have had on a good deer.

I thought I read about an area that was loosening restrictions on deer because of the huge population increase.

Deer are a pain in the ass here in Georgia.

I wonder what the laws are on hunting coyotes in neighborhoods? We had a problem with two coyotes in Suwanee eating peoples' little dogs a few months back. Saw one eating roadkill on one of my rides once - kind of scary when their fur is all bloody.

I was kind of half-hoping to run into one while walking my pit bull...

coyotes would not stand a chance against a Pitt-bull. Now wolves on the other hand can kill most dogs with out a problem.

Solo or in packs? I don't think we have a wolf problem

They eventually caught the coyotes with traps. And RELEASED THEM in the North GA mountains

Damned hippies.

I am not sure I have never seen a wolf that was alone. They only run in packs and can be pretty nasty, they don't scare easily at all.

Can't say I've ever seen wolves. I've seen dozens of coyotes in southern California and all over Georgia.

Makes me wanna shoot a coyote!

Coyote has the same restrictions as any other hunting. Certain distance from roads and buildings, etc. Other than that- it's probably an open season. Look up your local fish and game dept online.
Coyotes kill small dogs. It's a problem out here with people that want little yippy dogs- end up being little more than a rabbit meal for a coyote. A pit bull would maul a coyote though.

Here the other furbearer animals like grey fox and bobcat have a season, but alot of states have year yound coyote killin'

Columbus, Where????

Ohio and GA both have good hunting, and a short action .308 is perfect in both those states. I like a short action (my personal is a Marlin .30-30 lever action with a 4x fixed scope) when I was stationed in the south because it moved so well in the thicker foliage and the .308 is plenty enough to kill the deer there without being a punishing shot like a .338 win mag.
Ohio has some great deer. Plus you can certainly use a .308 win on any coyote, although you might as well forget about selling the pelts.

Hell don't forget you can take a road trip to WY and hunt coyote without even buying a license. It'd be worth it to pay for the out of state license for Antelope and spend a day on Coyotes too. Luckily it's only a few hours drive for me to WY.
