Who Cares????
Does anyone actually care about this?? I guess it's big "international" sporting news.
David Beckham is apparently going to be playing for the LA Galaxy in the top United States soccer league, MLS.
Beckham apparently has signed a deal for 5 years worth TWO HUNDRED AND FIFTY MILLION DOLLARS. Yes, folks, that's $250 MILLION dollars.
This actually increases my intentions of paying attention to MLS about 500 times over. However, seeing as my original intentions were 0%, even multiplying that by 500 will still end up with 0%.
Seriously, does anybody give a shit about this??

yeah, i do.
i like soccer, playing and watching. i went to UNC Chapel Hill where we rule in many sports, soccer being one of them. it's fun to watch and play but i don't think soccer is big in the US. we had a good surge after the 2002 world cup but the last one sure didn't help the fan base out much b/c we SUCKED . . . BIG TIME!!!!!!!!!

I think they are hoping to tap into a largely unexploited market in the U.S. We have a MASSIVE base of sports fans in this country, if even a small portion of them got into soccer it could mean huge sums of money.
Yeah, I know it will never happen but thats what these guys are hoping for.
i enjoy watchin soccer but more so the World Cup and olympics than the MLS. i cant say ive ever watched a MLS game. i watch the spanish league sometimes (GO ATHLETIC DE BILBAO!!!!) but i think that is WAY to much money for any sport star. i mean hes already got that spice girls chick
You know, I'm not gonna go through and add all that up...but by just looking at it and estimating, it would appear that Beckham will make more in one year than all of the other players combined.
I added up the base salary of the DC United team and got a base salary of $2,055,000.
There are 12 teams. You figure, even if a few of those teams are paying guys up to about $5 million, there are others that are paying less than $2 million.
That's absolutely ridiculous that one player is effectively getting paid more than the entire league.

You start out motorcycling with a full bag of luck and an empty bag of experience. The trick is to fill the bag of experience before you empty the bag of luck.
Some people are like slinkies; they're good for nothing but they still bring a smile to your face when you push them down a flight of stairs.
That is rediculous. I wouldn't even imagine that an MLS team would even sell enough tickets to pay this guy. An MLB would even have a tough time paying someone that kind of money.

hopefully this will open the door for other european stars that cannot hang with the upcoming european stars to come over hear and finish out their career. thus increasing the level of play in the US and hopefully we can capitalize on that during the world cups.

The Galaxy, citing industry experts, said Beckham's deal is worth more than $250 million in salary and commercial endorsements and is "thought to be the biggest in sporting history."
Beckham and his wife are worth $169 million, according to Britain's Rich List. Beckham alone reportedly makes about $32 million per year in salary and endorsements.
