Top Seven NFL QBs of All Time...
So I was speaking with Jake just now, and I mentioned something about Brett Favre and whether or not he'd be in my Top 7 all time NFL QBs.
Here are the seven that I would choose, however, I don't have them in an actual order. They are just the seven that I would say are the greatest that have played.
Keep in mind, I'm only 27 and as such didn't get to see alot of the old timers like Unitas or Namath play, so I'll basically be judging based on what I've been able to watch and what I know.
1. Montana
2. Young
3. Marino
4. Elway
5. Manning the Older
6. Brady
7. Jim Kelly
As I look at it, I think that Favre could replace maybe Jim Kelly, but I just don't know. I'm a firm believer that the Buffalo Bills of the late 80s/early 90s is probably the greatest football team ever assembled...yah, yah, yah, I know, they never won the Super Bowl...but just because they didn't win a championship doesn't mean that they still weren't the best team in the NFL that year...and Jim Kelly was the head of that team and took them there FOUR times in a row!!!
Favre is definitely in my Top 10, but I just don't know if I can put him in my Top 7.
***EDIT***
I just talked with Jake some more, and I forgot to mention why I left out Troy Aikman. I believe that Aikman was a benefactor of a great team. Statistically he isn't that great, he just got credited with wins. I think if you take any SOLID QB and put them on that Cowboys team that Aikman was a part of, you'd end up with the same result. I don't believe Aikman was special...he just happened to be on the right team at the right time.
And for the record everyone, I'm not trying to piss anyone off...so if I left off your favorite player, chime in and say why you think they should be in and why they are better than some other guys!! It's all about discussion, right guys??

Who is Jake and great job putting Steve Young on the list. Everyone goes ballistic over Montana but Young is clearly the better QB in my book.
Perhaps you should call this your top 7 of the modern era.
I'd put Farve in Kelly's spot on the list because he is tits Taking nothing from Kelly but he had 4 chances to do something heroic in the SB and never did.

Nice list.
Man, Montana was the shit but I agree that Young was the better QB. The first football game I ever watched was the Super Bowl that the 49ers decimated Denver in...and I've loved them ever since. I hated to see Montana go, but I loved even more watching Young grow.

Hello
I for the most part agree with gimp's list except for Kelly. I'd put either Aikman or Favre over Kelly. Hell, I'd put Warren Moon in above Kelly.

Your reference to Troy on being good because of his supporting cast could be said for Montana, heck for most good QB's. If the QB's don't have they supporting staff they need they will not be productive QB's in the league.
No Starr, Griese...I can't believe Bradshaw isn't on there somewhere...I guess 4 Superbowl wins or a never, ever duplicated unfeated season dosen't equal a few good years with the Colts
And to put Kelly above Aikman, when Aikman dominated makes no sense...

Did you see the reference to why players from back in the day aren't in my list, or do you need me to go back and quote it for you?
***EDIT***
A few good years with the Colts is an understatement for Peyton Manning. He's taken his team to the playoffs in, I believe, every season except his rookie season and 2002. He has put up astounding numbers year in and year out. He has played in an ungodly number of games straight, and shows no signs of not continuing that streak. Basically, since his second year in the NFL back in 1999, Peyton Manning has been by far the best passer in the game. I'd say that 7 straight seasons of being one of, if not the, best QB each season is a little bit better than "a few good years with the Colts."
***EDIT***
What would your top seven be, also?? I didn't just make the thread to discuss/debate my choices, but also to see what others would choose as the top 7...

Not necessarily the case all the time. Granted, all great quarterbacks have great supporting casts...however, I think that there is a difference, and this is how...
I don't think that Aikman "won" games. His team won them. There were games that other QBs have "won" simply by being great.
Elway did it alot. He single handedly put together winning drives and winning plays. I simply don't feel that Troy Aikman did that very often in his career.
He was probably one of the greatest "game managers" of all time, but I don't think that he changed many games simply by being on the field.
***EDIT***
And look at a player like Tom Brady. Tom Brady has been able to be a winner and a great QB with a different offensive looks every season for the last several years. He doesn't have the luxury of having the same great team put together that the Cowboys did every season...Brady has to go out there and get it done each year with different guys. This season is a perfect example of that. The Patriots have a ragtag bunch of receivers and a rookie running back that get the bulk of the play time, yet Brady continues to put up the same kind of numbers that he has in the past.

OK...In no paticular order, here's my choices for7 absolutely great QB's...
-Elway
-Marino
-Favre
-Montana
-Bradshaw
5 is enough...Hell, you really need look no further than the first 2...The heart, drive, unmeasurable talent, and the inability to ever accept defeat are so strong in those 2 it's almost pointless to add any others...
Honorable mention to Michael Vick...He has the natural ability of very few ever to play the game...His insane arm strength and multi dimensional play are something to be feared by any defense...Time will tell if his abilities get utilized in the right manner...

I agree with your list, however, I give no props to the inaccurate Mike Vick.
He is a horrible quarterback that doesn't make very good decisions...that, and he hasn't been the same ever since he broke his leg.
