Default Which Heisman Finalist Will Make the Best NFL Player?

Saw this poll on ESPN the other day, and figured I'd throw it out here.

Which Heisman Finalist do you think will make the best NFL player:

1. Troy Smith--up until this year Smith seemed alot like Mike Vick. However, this year Smith has shown that he is more accurate and has a much better pocket presence than Vick had.

2. Darren McFadden--a stand up running back who plays in an odd offense. McFadden gains alot of yards and runs strong, but his upright running style might make him an easier target to tackle for NFL defenses.

3. Brady Quinn--set a ton of records at Notre Dame, but never seemed to be able to win the big game. He also seems to be fairly streaky, playing well for a few quarters then playing horribly for a few quarters.

4. Steve Slaton--runs hard and gained alot of yards. Problem he has is it seems he plays for the most under rated team in the country. In the NFL he would be fairly similar to your majority of RBs.

For the record, I voted for Troy Smith.

I think that Brady Quinn will get drafted earlier than Smith, which means Quinn will end up playing for a horrible team like the Lions or the Raiders.

Smith apparently isn't on most teams draft boards until at the earliest the 15th pick. That may seem odd, but it actually means great things for a player like Smith. It means that he could end up getting picked up by a solid team that has an aging QB that may be retiring in a few seasons. A team like Baltimore or even a better team.

I think it's going to be either Slaton or McFadden. For some odd reason it seems hard for top college qb's to become good NFL qb's.

Doesn't matter. The history of Heisman winners doing good in the NFL is pretty small.

Hmmm...that's kind of wrong.

If you look at overall history of the game, like going back to the beginning of the Heisman, the winner is more times than not a pretty solid NFL player.

It's not until about the last 15 years or so that the winner of the Heisman has been a bit of a bust more times than not.

And of the last 4 winners, only one of them has been a bust right off the start. One is Carson Palmer, and we all know where he stands. One is Reggie Bush, and he's having a pretty good season...maybe not statistically, but he's made a difference for the Saints. One is Matt Leinart, who is having an okay season for a HORRIBLE team.

The only bust is Jason White, and he's not really a bust considering most people KNEW he wasn't going to have a career in the NFL due to his knee problems.

1994 Rashaan Salaam Colorado RB Jr. 1,743 --huh?
1995 Eddie George Ohio State RB Sr. 1,460 -- not bad carerr
1996 Danny Wuerffel Florida QB Sr. 1,363 -- probably bagging groceries
1997 Charles Woodson Michigan CB Jr. 1,815 -- semi legit career
1998 Ricky Williams Texas RB Sr. 2,355 -- need i say anything else
1999 Ron Dayne Wisconsin RB Sr. 2,042 -- still productive
2000 Chris Weinke Florida State QB Sr. 1,628 -- HAHA throws over 400yds and STILL can't win
2001 Eric Crouch Nebraska QB Sr. 770 --
2002 Carson Palmer USC QB Sr. 1,328 -- so far so good

2004 Matt Leinart USC QB Jr. 1,325 --not to much yet

I am going to point a few things out to you.

Starting with this:
Quote:
1991 Desmond Howard Michigan WR Jr. 2,077 -- again, WHO?
Look at the MVP for Super Bowl XXXI on this page:
http://www.superbowl.com/history/mvps

By the way, nobody plays in the NFL for 12 seasons if they are a "who?"

Quote:
1995 Eddie George Ohio State RB Sr. 1,460 -- not bad carerr
Eddie George actually had a pretty brilliant career, including coming within about half a yard of winning a Super Bowl

Quote:
1997 Charles Woodson Michigan CB Jr. 1,815 -- semi legit career
Woodson is the only defensive player ever to win the award, and he's in his 9th year as a starter. That's more than "semi legit" by NFL standards...where the average career is like 3 years at best.

Quote:
1998 Ricky Williams Texas RB Sr. 2,355 -- need i say anything else
Despite his off field problems, nearly 9,000 yards from scrimmage in only 7 seasons is pretty damn good. His off field problems overshadow the fact that he's an idiot...but he's an idiot that's a damn good football player.

Quote:
like i said, out of all the Heisman winners, the best of the college MOST of them have not been productive
If you're going to say "all the Heisman winners," why don't you go back further than 16 years??

Let's go back the previous 10 before that:

1980-George Rogers-1981 Rookie of the Year, Led the NFL in Rushing and was second in rushing TDs, 1986 led the league in rushing TDs, went to the Pro Bowl twice, and won a Super Bowl with the Redskins
1981-Marcus Allen-No explanation necessary
1982-Herschel Walker-No explanation necessary
1983-Mike Rozier-never amounted to much, but did rush for over 1000 yards one season with Houston
1984-Doug Flutie-No explanation necessary
1985-Bo Jackson-What could Bo have accomplished if it wasn't for his hip?
1986-Vinny Testaverde-in 20 seasons has thrown for over 45,000 yards and is STILL playing
1987-Tim Brown-one of the best WR to ever play the game. Nuff said.
1988-Barry Sanders-THE BEST RB EVER TO PLAY THE GAME.
1989-Andre Ware-Uber bust.

So, out of those 10 winners, only two of them never amounted to much. In fact, many of them are widely regarded as some of the best players ever to play their position.

The bottom line here is this, in the history of the game, more Heisman winners have ended up having solid NFL careers than not...

My point is about calling out the heisman's is in the last 16yrs or so not many of those names will be recognized in another 20yrs.

Someone is going to say Desmond Howard and they're going to say "i think he won the MVP once" but other then that....

The whole premise of the Heisman is being the best of college. Their names will be in one with college football...not NFL

Good article on ESPN's site about Troy Smith and why the NFL scouts are not seeing what is special about him.
