Default Cowboys release K Vanderjagt

IRVING, Texas (Ticker) - Mike Vanderjagt may be the most accurate kicker in NFL history, but he was making Bill Parcells plenty nervous.

The Dallas Cowboys on Monday released Vanderjagt, who has converted 13-of-18 field goals this season.

ESPN and the NFL Network is reporting that Dallas will sign Martin Gramatica to replace Vanderjagt.

Along with missing five field goal attempts, including two against the Indianapolis Colts in a 21-14 win on November 19, Vanderjagt has also been weak on kickoffs.

Parcells, the Cowboys coach, admitted last week that he was "concerned" with Vanderjagt.

The 36-year-old Vanderjagt made 217-of-248 field-goal attempts (87.5 percent) in his eight-year career with the Indianapolis Colts before signing with Dallas last March.

Last season, Vanderjagt made 23-of-25 field goals. However, Vanderjagt did not come through when the Colts needed him most, missing a 46-yard attempt with 17 seconds left in a 21-18 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers in the divisional playoffs in January.

Gramatica played for the Colts this season when Adam Vinatieri was sidelined with a groin injury. Gramatica is the Tampa Bay Buccaneers' all-time leader with 591 points.

The Cowboys went through three kickers last season - Billy Cundiff, Jose Cortez and Shaun Suisham - and had three misses from 38 yards or less.

Me too. Besides the fact that he hasn't been horrible, (he hasn't been real good either) from what I've heard Dallas will also have to pay him a pretty good chunk of change still.

No, that was his brother Bill Gramatica. Even though they aren't twins, they are both identically retarded.

I believe that little mistake will cost the 'boys roughly $2.5 million. Sucks, but he sure didn't seem like his old self. You just knew this was going to come soon with the way the standings are. If the Cowboys want to hold on and win the division, they will need a reliable kicker.

Both of them are has beens, so maybe its a sideways move personnel wise, but it would be a fresh confidence start for Parcells and the team in a kicker. Vandy was going to have a hard time getting anyone's confidence, especially the way he was kicking.

They need to get Morten Anderson. That guy will be kicking fieldgoals when he is 75 years old

I think I would have kept Vand, even if they signed Gramatica. They could've lost the dead weight somewhere else. If Gramatica starts missing what are they gonna do? Cut him also.

I'd say Gramatica is a downgrade. There's a reason why he hasn't had a steady kicking job since Tampa cut him in 2004.

Vander was a headcase. I thought he was a good kicker but had damn bug mental block he was struggling to get around. As for Gramatica, I was let down to see he was the replacement.

Whoever up there said Anderson should kick, I'd take that chance too.

So if Gram doesn't work out, maybe he can hold and Romo can kick....???
