anything that uses a harddrive or cd/dvd to record on is going to be subject to acceleration g's and vibrations and bumps in the road. they will stop recording etc..
the best media for this application remains Mini DV. (tapes) some video cameras will allow the connetion of external cameras such as bullet cams.
. The mini DV camcorders still work the best of all. IMO.
and bullet cams are more expensive than a camorder is. and it requires you to buy a external recorder. actually, this is the most expensive way to go about it.
bullet cams that are worth a crap are very expensive.

I haven't had any luck with my miniDV. It works for about 30 seconds then the head starts skipping around on the tape. Until I shell out for viosport type external camera, I'm using my point and shoot with a 2gb card. The less moving parts the better as any vibration into the camera is going to cause some sort of mechanical failure. I've also been using a RAM mount and I'm very happy with it. I can switch up between the camera and my GPS with no problem.

Living the life some consider a myth.
I use a product from a company called Chasecam - ChaseCam, Your Source for Video at Speed Their PDR100 unit records onto Flash memory cards at about DVD quality (MPEG2 at 8mbps).
I've had a few issues with vibration in the past using the PDR100 (underseat on an R1) but this was overcome by more secure mounting to stop the unit bouncing around.
The advantage of the PDR100 is that apart from the wire to the camera, everything else is self contained - the mic, batteries, memory etc - all within the one unit. With MiniDV and camcorders invariably there will be multiple wires to the mic, the battery box to power the camera, plus the size of the MiniDV camera to consider.
Overall, I'm pretty happy with the PDR100 and would recommend it.
I'm using a Canon ZR70 camcorder. It is an older MiniDV model with full plug ins for external camera and mic. I think I got the camcorder used for $100. It takes good video, and has been reliable for the little I've used it. I also bought a 480 line bullet camera using the sony ExView chip. It actually produces a good picture, although something more than 480 lines would be a bit better. I really like the bullet cam for the placability. The small size and light wieght really open up your mounting options.
My only problem is sound recording. My loud v-twin over drives my current mic setup and sounds pretty bad. I'm placed 6 Megaohms of resistance between the mic condenser and the input to the camera. it is better but still needs help. I want the video to sound as good as my bike does to my ears. Thats really the whole reason I wanted to video anything anyways...
Any ideas on a mic setup that would be better than what I'm dealing with now?

I just use my Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W55 w/ a tank mount. I think it works very well.. records great - used it all through the gap and around town. Thing I like about it is, when using at the gap and what not I could stop and take it off the bike to take still pics - all saved onto a memory stick...

The act of riding is a form of meditation, because the concentration that's required to safely ride a motorcycle tends to focus the mind in a way that eliminates other mental distractions that might interfere with the mission. This creates a single-mindedness that, in effect, displaces the continuous stream of thoughts that normally flow through our consciousness.
