I think a cool (but probably not important) thing to bring on rides would be a camera. That way you can take awesome photos of your day ride and post them on this forum ;)
I know I've passed a lot of kodak moments and wished I had a camera. With the digital age here in full swing, you can have them and publish them the minute you get home.
I haul my DSLR all over the place in my Cortech tri-bag, but the new ultra-compacts make it a no-brainer for anyone to take decent pictures while traveling. My ultra compact stays in a dry box like this (which I originally acquired for hiking).
(FWIW I recommend an ultra compact with removable, rechargeable batteries, use standard SD memory cards and have an acceptable optical zoom).

I always bring a cheap digital camera, but somehow I still end up riding past all the good photo ops. Who wants to pull over when you're in the zone? I just tell myself I'll stop "on the way back." As a result, I have a bunch of photos from rides that consist mainly of everyone getting ready to leave in the morning or filling up with gas or drinking a post-ride beer.
I always bring an extra battery for my cell phone. Just one of those cheap one time use deals. Saved me a couple of times when I was gone on a long trip and camping without electricity.
