Default Luggage for the 05 R1

I've started to take some long trips recently and decided that I definately need to do away with the camelpack backpack I have. It really starts to get annoying after 2-300 miles. So I throught about it and I want to get some bags for the bike.

I've read through a lot of the posts and websites that sell luggage for bikes and I'm concerned about one thing. Is there any way I can get a tailbag for my bike? Obviously saddlebags are out of the question because of the undertail exhuast that would burn anything on the sides, but what about the back seat? How could I mount it? I can't really run straps under the tail because they would be up on the exhaust. Am I just screwed?

Anyone that has any insight or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

The tail bag I used to use on my F4i (Chase Harper) didn’t tie under the exhaust. Most sportbikes have back hooks for luggage and the front straps you attach to the passenger pegs. I actually didn’t have passenger pegs on my F4i I attached the straps just underneath the plastic and on to the bracket that held my hi-mount exhaust. Later on I installed a fender eliminator kit and lost my luggage hooks, so I installed some metal hooks.

Depending on the type of traveling you plan to do and equipment you plan to carry, you can probably get away with a good secure tail-bag/pack and a tankbag (a narrow one for sportbikes).

Good versatile riding apparel can help eliminate the need for too much excess clothing. {For that matter water resistant (or waterproof ) gear can all but eliminate the need for rainwear}. A removable cool/cold weather liner for the jacket can help if the temp drops.

If camping look for good hi quality backpacking type equipment that saves space.

If you decide on some sportbike saddlebags, get some that are compact and can be secured with space away from (heat sources) or fabricate an internal stiffener to keep them away from exhaust systems.

Packing: lay out the stuff and throw back 30% of it that you can get away without anyway.

Awesome. I guess I had wrongly assumed that most of them wrapped under the tail. I've never really dealt with tail bags before. That clears things up a lot.

It is easy to get nervous making a purchase you don't fully understand on the internet. I can't seem to find a place where I can look at this stuff in person here in town. I'm so glad I've got you guys to turn to.

Thanks again.
