Okay.....I live my life under a rock For Christmas I got the Illustrated Edition on the "Long Way Round" and the special edition DVD (You have to order the DVD from overseas or Canada) Man talk about a trip! Now I want to do something like that, maybe circumnaviagte North America or North and South America. So A liitle poll to see how many would seriously under take a trip like this.

That's why I voted maybe. Money is a huge part of it. But if I had the money, I would go.

I would definitely do it, but a few stipulations.
1) I would need to improve the comfort of my Bandit significantly for long trips (something I am currently working on with EFI, big windshield, etc. etc.), and I would also need to get a bunch of spare parts first. More realistically, I would want to get a GoldWing, Ultra Classic, or the like. We're talking about something significantly longer than a "mere" 1000 miles in a day, and it might be nice to have the most comfortable bike you could get your hands on.
2) If traveling to Mexico or further south, I would have to be armed. Fact is there are too many unsafe places down there (so say the people I know who live/have lived down there).
3) Oh yeah, and I would have to have the money and the time to take off. At present I could possibly find the time (this summer), but not the money.
It would be neat if we could organize something like this, but I think the hardest part for everyone would be finding the time and the money. It's a lot easier to organize a 1000-mile run, because that can be done in a weekend. When you're talking 20,000 miles, you need a month at least. Realistically, you need two months if you actually intend on being able to stop and see anything along the way.

Ha, I had to revisit this thread again. Last night over pizza and wine, Rick (RickC1957), his wife Diane, our friend Jay, and I decided to take a year off and tour the world 5-7 years from now.
Now we have a lot of homework to do. Where are we going to go? What bikes are we going to ride? Where will we find the money to do this? It's just a year, no sweat, it can be done.
Let the planning begin

Money isn't a big problem in my eyes. If I want to do something, money has never been a deciding factory, I will find a way to raise it, make it or come up with some other creative finiancing. What is a problem in my eyes, is commitment and TIME! Time is what kills me, damn those 24 hour days!

The bike will be the hard decision, since 3 out of the 4 are inseamed challenged And watching Charley, Ewan and Claudio dump those heavy Beamers about 100 times was painful at the least. My concern is we have to find a bike that all 4 of use are happy, the thought of having 4 different mounts, is driving me batty, that means I have to be able to fix 4 different mounts and we have to carry spares for 4 different machine. I want only one type of machine on this ride.

I say we stick with Ducs, the three of us already have Ducs. And what's wrong with using the bikes that we already have?
