Default backpack recommendations

Can anyone recommend a decent backpack capable of holding a small 1 person tent, sleeping bag/pillow and a few odds and ends? I spent last weekend traveling through New England and all I had was an old Targus computer backpack that I had to gut (cutting out the padded computer compartment) to hold everything. It worked, but it wasn't optimal.

I'm looking for something with the largest interior and the smallest exterior dimensions... in other words, something that can carry a decent amount of luggage without looking like I have an amputee strapped to my back Saddle bags and/or top cases aren't options (I just don't like them).

Also, do magnetic tank bags end up scratching the paint on your tank? I would think one would be perfect for items you need to access frequently, like cameras, but I would probably avoid them if it meant the tank would end up with signs of wear.

Thanks.

Tank bags for you.the second link shows a tail bag but they have the tank bag as well that won't scratch your tank.
