Nakeds vs. Hypersports
Between something like a z1000 and a zx-12r, what would you think would be better for touring? It would seem to me the hypersports bikes would be better since they probably have better wind protection, but I don't know because I've never ridden either. Maybe range/fuel milage would become a factor with hypersports?

I'm not sure I understand why this is such a dilemma. Why choose when you can do both? They do make sporty bikes with full fairings and comfortable riding positions, you know. ZZR1200, Bandit 1200S, Ducati ST's, BMW's, etc, etc, etc.

The zx12 would be better, because of wind protection. The z1000 would be better because of the more upright position. The zx12 with clip-ons would be comfy. The z1000 with aftermarket screen would provide wind protection.

The Z1000 is really small, might get cramped up after a while in the saddle.

How about a FJR1300 by Yamaha. Both power and luxury. It's a lil on the pricey side but man....ABS, 1300cc motor, hard saddle bags, full fairings, and an adjustable windshield. Someday when I get old perhaps. someday

I dont think either are wonderful touring rigs, but the 12r is prolly a little better. Though the ZZR1200 is the best choice. Its got the old ZX-11R motor (145 hp) good riding position, saddle bags, and nice wind protection. And its well priced. That'd be my sport touring Kawi choice.

If I were going to go touring on a standard it'd be on an FZ1. Good wind protection with hyper-bike levels of power.

Riding isn't only about the scratching on a Sunday morning. Sometimes it's about the 400 mile ride on Saturday to get to where you'll be scratching on Sunday morning with a 400 mile ride home that evening.

Not to mention SHAFT DRIVE! Reliable and low-maintenance. Chain driven bikes are more trouble to tour on, especially with no centerstand. Makes chain maintenance much more difficult.

I agree, for the best of both worlds a FJR 1300 would be great, or I would pick a ZZR 1200. But keep in mind just a few years most sport/touring bikes were 750 class. nothing wrong with a VFR of Katana.

I love the FJR 1300. If I could only have one bike, that would be it.
