Default Question on soft and hard luggage?

I'm about to ride to the Gulf of Mexico in a couple of weeks and I need help with setting up the bike for hualing all my stuff. I'm not packing for a couple of days just a down there and back trip on the weekend because I like to ride.

I know for sure I'm going to get a tankbag but I'm unsure of which size. I want a tank bag big enough that I wont regret the purchase and wish for a slightly larger/smaller size. There is quite a bit of info on the sportbike websites and online stores but everytime i think I have narrowed it down to a particular model I read a post about someone disliking it because it scratched the tank, left brown spots, etc. Ebay seems to have alot of them but unsure about the quality (forgot the name brand).

I saw a post of a guy with an R1 and he had a trunk that extended past the rear of the bike and it was like the hard case luggage found on cruisers. I thought it looked pretty good. Since I can't see the rear end of the bike and don't want to spend my attention wondering if a tail bag is still secure I would like something like the setup he had. Any information and or tips will be greatly appreciated.

Hmm, sport touring doesn't get alot of attention here at SBN. Anyway, I just purchased an Oxford magnetic tank bag for the 636. It's not huge so I can still see my instruments and so far it's unobtrusive, although I've only rode about 10 miles with it. I'm going to give it a good run this weekend thru some twisties.
As far as some hard luggage for the bike, I'm probably not going to shell out that much money. I'll use a backpack if need be.

Sound like all you really needs a good tank bag i run a teknic and i also have a tail bag and a back pack run with the back pack alot and never had much trouble with my tail back it is a tour master and stays secure quite well i acutally use it more then my tank bag at times

But for you a good tank back and either the back pack or a tail bag should work fine and if your worrkied about the tail bag then go with a back pack there not as bad as you may think unless you totally over weight them down

I use a Nelson Rigg and a Chase Harper, both are good bags and not too expensive.
