Speed Triple To become a true icon is no easy feat. But from its very first incarnation over a decade ago the Speed Triple assumed just that status, mixing a primal three-cylinder core with sporting ability and an aggressive, stripped-down stance.

Thumbs up Idle too high?

This is my first post so Hello.
I recently sold my Buell firebolt and acquired a 2001 S3. It outperforms the Buell in every aspect so far. I think the idle may be too high though because the transmission feels a bit clunky when switching from neut to first. I looked everywhere is there an idle adjustment screw somewhere?

welcome!

no screw, it's controlled by the computer.
the transmissions on Triumphs are a bit clunky until they break in (10-15,000 miles). You might want to check that your clutch is disengaging / is properly adjusted.

what speed is it idling at?

All my bikes (same engine/tranny as you have) go into first without much of a clunk.

What kind of oil are you using? When was it last changed? Is your oil level correct with the bike upright? Is your clutch adjusted properly?

Check the throttle cable, that could be too tight and causing the high idle. Mine idles at just over 1k RPM, which seems pretty normal.

Thumbs up

Hey thanks for the responses. Mine idles about 2k at cold start and drops to about 1500 after a couple minutes or so. Odd that I dont get much of a clunk when I shift into first from here. By the time I hit the first stop light, the idle is hanging around 11-12k. I need to change the oil because the previous owner did nothing with the bike. Who knows what he used?? I plan on purchasing a service manual at the dealership today (thank God I am done with HD dealerships!!!) Oh and tI have about 7,200 so far so thats a ways away from 15k. Other than this, this bike is awesome I am glad I found this before buying a monsterbike.
Oh, are there anyothr S3 forums you recommend?

When you start the bike, it should go up to 2k for a couple seconds and then return to about 1100 rpm.

check your throttle response... if you blip the throttle, does it go RIGHT back to idle, or does it slowly go back down?

Check the throttle adjustment. With the bike off, open the throttle ALL the way. You should hear the throttle bodies click against the stop. Then let go of the throttle, and they should click against the other stop. If there is no click, you need a little more slack in your throttle cable.

I had this problem with my bike last weekend. It was annoying, but does not take long to adjust.

I see where you are gong with this, I think a good cable lube is on order today (clutch and throttle) aswell. Hopefully they have that manual.

they usually have the manual- but it's like 85 bucks.

The haynes manual is pretty darn good for these bikes, and is only 35
