Default looking to get an aprilia, I NEED ADVICE

Right now im riding a 02 cbr 600. I know, why am i talking in the Aprilia room. I am going to get either a R1 or An Aprilia 1000r. i wanted to know what you guys thought about the decision. I have never rode european, or a vtwin. As a matter of fact never seen anyone around my way riding one. but i love them and just wat to get some feedback fom riders, not magazines. Any help you guys can offer me would be great. thanks alot

I'd buy one in a heartbeat if I could. If you have the funds, I'd definitly pick the Aprilla over the R1

Much like a ferrari - you are buying a different beast altogether... and, unfortunately, different problems. I'm not trying to scare you away from owning one of the finest motorcycles made, just trying to make sure you make a good choice. If you're buying used: Buy one from someone that knows the bike and has worked with it to make it stable, or buy a new one from a shop that you are confident in their abilities.

I own an '04 rsvR and ride an '02 f4i at the track. The R1 will hands down outperform the Aprilia in many aspects... however, the Aprilia is by far the finest thing I have ever ridden. And the coolness factor - well, I get compliments quite often from people of all different walks. The guys with the Japenese bikes apreciate it because it's not "one of the 10,000" out there... and the guys riding other European bikes appreciate it for what it is.

I haven't had major issues with my bike - just minor issues. I had to find another shop that I felt was capable to work on it.

Good luck on your decision!

I've had to "work into" a love affair with mine - but, now that I have, I don't think I will ever get rid of it.
You may not experience any issues at all, as most of the people that I know which have an Aprilia have had very few problems.

My advice:
-- break the engine in correctly - then beat the living shit out of it for a ride or 2. I'm not kidding. once I had done a track day on mine, her behavior seemed to improve.
-- Make sure someone goes through the suspension with you. Mine was initially setup for the most non-aggresive ride ever. I feel much more comfortable on mine now that I have set the sag/damping/etc... with some help of an engineer. The bike is a bit more of a handful to manage - but to me, it's all worth it.
-- check apriliaforum.com regarding whatever you end up buying 05 vs. 06 and see what people are talking about. I found out quite a few things that I never would have known about otherwise (swingarm recall, rear-brake "issue", etc...)
-- be sure to ask the dealer up front for an estimated maintenance and service cost over a few years. Again, being that they are not Japanese.. there are a few "planned" items which you will have to take care of. (valves at 400 miles, 2000 miles-I think???) Anyhow...

In my opinion - Aprilia is on the upward path again. I think they have crested their hard times and hopefully the bullshit will start to subside. That being said - the Aprilia will once again become more of a desirable commodity and they will be more difficult to obtain.

Keep in mind -- I said "many aspects" ;-) With the handling/brakes and V-twin our bikes can hang with anything out there, in the right situation. A v-twin won't get "wheel spin-up" like a four, the brakes are beyond amazing and even the showa suspension is above par.

For the money - you really can't go wrong. In hindsight, I wish I would have opted for the factory. Same EXACT engine (except for exhaust), but definitely some trick parts on there. (Lighter wheels, Steering Damper, Radial mounted Brembo's, Ohlins fully-adjustable suspension, carbon fiber).

The only mod I have is a Power Commander and Leo Vince high-mount Factory slip-ons. Perhaps I'll post a pic or 2.

go with the Aprilia. twins are great around town and you won't be like everyone else in town with an R1. either way iam sure you will enjoy your new bike. lol. here are some pics of some RARE untittled 0 mile Aprilias. i took these pics maybe 2 weeks ago, at an event with some radio personalities and free food. the dealership is Cycle Riders of Longwood FL. and yes Aprilia guys that's an untittled 1999 mille SP. enjoy.

I am also looking at a 2004 or newer Aprilia Factory to fill my stable. You won't be disappointed they are a great bike. They also just won Masterbike this year.

Aprilias are alright bikes but every guy I've ever met that rode one was a total douchebag. Oh, also keep in mind they're kinda heavy.

I was in a similar situation as you in 2002. I owned an 01 CBR 600 F4i at the time and it was fun and all but I felt I needed something more unique and with more character. Well, I went down to my local Aprilia/Ducati dealer and test rode an 02 Aprilia Mille RSV1000. That was it...I had to have one. I love the v-twin power/sound/soul etc of the bike. Subsequently I had to sell it a year later due to going back to school. Well now that school is almost over I came across a great deal on an 00.5 Mille RSV 1000 and I had to have it. My Aprilia's have only had very minor problems..heck even my Honda had minor probs (leaky water pump and CCT recall). The Aprilia probs have been: clutch and rear brakes that need bleeding regularly (VERY EASY TO DO MYSELF), leaky valve cover gasket (VERY EASY FIX MYSELF), and throttle cable slipped off due to nut coming loose at the throttle body (again simple fix myself). I have owned several bikes but not one of them has given me the feeling that the Aprilia gives when riding it. It puts a smile on my face every time and quite often I have to look back just to admire its awesome looks in a parking lot when leaving it.

Try and arrange a test ride on one and buy used if you can. These things depreciate like crazy and a 00.5-02 model can be had for $5200-$7000 EASILY.

The engines are EXTREMELY reliable. They are built by Rotax which as I understand it also builds airplane engines. They can easily go 20,000 miles without needing any valve adjustment. Try that with a Ducati!! hahah
Think Italian styling with virtual Honda reliability.

Truth be told yes an R1 will beat the pants off the Aprilia in sheer power but most of us couldn't even maximize the potential of a 600cc bike..much less a 1000cc v-twin or inline 4cycl. Ride both and get the one that stirs your soul. Here is a link to a great Aprilia forum www.apriliaforum.com

BTW- Most Aprila riders are very nice people.

Let us know what you decide.

Nathan

Here's a little story for you:

I've had the same best friend since i was 5. His name is Steve. He has a friend Aaron, who got a CBR f3 a few years back. I had never even considered a sportbike before i saw this thing.... in Detroit you like Muscle Cars and Harleys... END of story.

So i liked sportbikes from then on, and have had a couple now... my friend steve- no so easily swayed. He bought a cruiser. Not a Harley, because they're expensive and whatnot....

Anyways- we went looking for scorpion helmets last year because i wanted to see what they were like, and the only place that sold them was Detroit Eurocycles, a Moto Guzzi/Aprilia/ KTM dealer... so we go down there...

He steps in the door, sees an Aprilia (i forget which one it was..), and says- yeah- i NEED to have one of those!!

To this day, that's all he talks about for his next bike....

They're something special, all right...

2004 Aprilia dry weight: 185kg (408 pounds)
2004 cbr 1000 dry weight: 396 pounds.

Anyhow - perhaps we ARE all douchebags... and guys that drive bmw's are too... whatever.

I'll be called a douchebag ALL DAY LONG if I get to ride my Aprilia. I love the thing.

oh ya.. if you're really looking for a light bike.. here it is...
