Default A* SM-X boots fitment

I think I already know the answer but I'll ask anyways. I have a pair of older SM-X boots I've worn off and on as "all weather" boots. However, they have never had a great fit. The foot portion fits exactly how it should (if I get any smaller, my toes would be cramped), but the boot is loose at the front of the ankle and around the lower calf.

The end result is one could pull the heel an easy 1.5-2 inches away from the bottom of my foot. It's like it needs another fastening mechanism at the ankle and top of the boot. This older version just zips up about 5 inches and then velcros at the top, but you'd need to weigh several hundred pounds or tuck your pants in the boots to get it fairly snug.

My main question is if there is a reasonable risk that they could be yanked off during an accident. I have other boots but they are $$$, heavily vented, and not even water resistant. I'm riding to alaska and back from texas and it's the rainy season up there; the boots would probably be ruined just on the trip up there with no chance to immediately dry out.

The boots probably ARE made for leather pants to go INSIDE. That's the idea. Do you wear riding pants?

Never out-ride your ability to react (even stop) within the distance you can see (at least on the street).

If you can move the heel that much, they DO NOT fit properly. That's how A* boots fit me, so I bought Sidi. I highly recommend their Typhoon boots for all weather (mostly cold\wet) distance riding. You should be able to find them heavily discounted if you can find your size. The On Road or Sport Rain would be a good choice too.

Yes but simply filling the space up with clothes does not solve the problem. I think it's simply a poor design, the newer boots have straps in the exact place I need them on these. I think I'm just going to buy the sidi b's with rain covers.
