Default Which helmets fit similar to Shoei 1000?

Hey everyone, I've been lurking for a very long time and am finally taking my MSF this Saturday. I plan to purchase a bike after the MSF, but would like to acquire some gear first. I've been riding dirtbikes for years and have no issue sizing gloves, boots, and pants. However, helmets have given me a bit of an issue.

My head is 59cm and I tried on a large HJC, not sure the model, and a large Shoei rf-1000. The HJC didn't feel comfortable as I felt pressure on my temples almost instantly. The Shoei rf-1000 felt amazing, but I only walked around the bike shop wearing it.

I am saving the money for the Shoei, but would also like to know if anyone has experience with helmets that fit similar to the Shoei? There are a few places that I can drive to and try on helmets, but I'd like to narrow down the choices a little bit.

Any ideas?

I wear a Fox large dirtbike helmet and it fits great.

Hopefully a Shoei will be in the future. However I'd like to try on some comparable lids first. I plan on taking the MSF with my dirtbike helmet and goggles for shear comfort and familiarity.

I don't want to sound cheap, but if I can get a nice comfy, simple helmet that fits similar to a Shoei 1000 then I might just do that and spend the money on other gear to get a good basic setup first. After that I'd probably save for a nice helmet with graphics.

I'm definitely in the window shopping phase for now.

You won't find another brand that fits like an RF-1000. Even Shoei's X-11 has a different fit than the RF.

I'd try to find brand new "older" models that have been deeply discounted.

That's what the shop said too. I'll have to go back and see which model HJC it was that they had. I know for sure it was a large and I looked for an XL, but they only had Sm-Lg on the shelf.

Thanks for the help guys.

Not in my experience. I just purchased a Shoei RF-1000 and its fit is quite different from my HJCs. My most recent HJC is a CL-SP, and on my head it feels like it is shaped rounder than the RF-1000. The RF-1000 seems to fit me more like my Suomy than any HJC full face I've worn. Maybe a different model HJC will be different, but the CLs I've had seem to be rounder in shape like my current CL-SP.

Just a little update. Was at the dealership last night and tried on quite a few helmets:

Arai RX7, large. Fit wise it felt all right, but just didn't click for me.
Shark RSR2 , large. Really light helmet that fit well and was an option.
HJC AC-12, large. Again it seemed to fit weird on my head around the temples. I think it might just be something that I have stuck in my head.
Shoei RF-1000, large. Just felt right for my noggin.
Suomy Spec 1R, large. Really liked the feel of the helmet, but they only had one in large and I wasn't thrilled with the graphics.

I ended up purchasing a bike from them, but as part of the deal I worked in some free gear. They offered some lower priced mesh jackets, base model gloves, and a decently priced helmet. I joked that I just couldn't buy a bike unless I was comfortable with the gear. So I ended up getting:

Shoei Rf-1000 Caster TC-1 to replace my no name 1980's beast that I've been borrowing; is DOT approved at least.
Alpinestars black label leather jacket because I don't currently have a jacket.
Alpinestars SP-1 Gloves, I already have Alpinestars SMX-4 gloves, so now I have both short cuff and gauntlet styles.

Now I need to add something other than my work boots and jeans and I'll be good to go gear wise. I have the feeling that I'll be collecting quite a bit... it is a sickness right?

I agree. I had an HJC AC-12 and it squeezed my head and cheekbones so much I couldn't open or shut my mouth. I have an Arai and love it. The shoei was nice too but I got a great deal on the Arai and like just the plain solids they offer for some reason.

It should be noted though that my HJC is sweet and very light. I wish it fit my head at the price it is especially.
