Icon Chukkas vs Puma Flats vs Shift Fuel vs Oxtar Adrenaline **Pics update 4.24.08**
I placed an order yesterday for a jacket (alpinestar exile) and riding boots (icon chukkas) from STG.com, but havent havent sent the money yet. I need to call tomorrow to ask some questions anyway.
Having some second thoughts about the icon's. I'd like to know what people's experiences are with these different shoes... I'm going for a comfortable, low cut street riding shoe that offers some protection. Perfect boot would fit/feel like a sneaker, look like a casual shoe/sneaker, but protect like a race boot (yea i know, keep dreaming). Comfort is key, as what i'm wearing should be one of the last things on my mind while riding.
low cut street riding shoe..but protect like a race boot
Doesn't exist. Low cut riding shoes will never protect your ankles, and offer only slightly better protection than regular shoes.
Is there no way you would buy a commuter-type boot? I can walk all day in my A* SMX-4's, and in all-black people very rarely notice that they are different than usual.
Of those choices, the Icon and Puma shoes look to offer the best protection, though.

I actually had no problem walking all day in my Sidi Vertigo Corsas at a motorcycle show. They have a calf release trigger on them (kind of like nice ski boots) that help the comfort. They're a bit "interesting" looking to wear to work, though.
I have the Puma Flats with the Ducati branding on them. They're quite comfortable and offer a decent amount of armor. I'd highly recommend them over the rest of your choices (except don't get the red trim like I did. You could probably wear the all-black to work without issue).
I bought these and love them. I've had em for about two weeks now and wear them almost everyday. They have good ankle protection. They are pretty stiff when you first get them though. Super comfortable after you break them in. I walk around in them for 10 hours everyday at work.

some people have feelings that get hurt easily. I simply say it may be a case of sandivaginitis.....go to the doctor. It sounds like sandpaper when you walk.

Really looking for something that nobody will really notice. My mother hates the idea of me riding and the more out of site it is, the better. Rather not wear a backpack just for shoes if i dont have to.

Thanks for the input, but those are downright ugly! Like i said, thanks for the suggestion though. Just doesnt really tickle my fancy, so to speak.
Again, thanks for the suggestion - but i think those look like cheap oversized plasticky basketball shoes from the late 90's. I also thought the oxtars i originally posted were hideous, but i kept seeing the name thrown into conversation around here that i wanted to see what kind of response they'd get.

lol, took the words right out of my mouth!
Now i gotta find somewhere local that carries these puma's...
i ride with shift fuels and love them....i can ride to school and the gym without bringing extra footwear and can easily walk around with them for a full day without looking goofy..obviously not equal protection as a full out race boot but when paired with a nice set of riding jeans(i wear shift lo-down) you can get yourself a casual look with alot more protection than a set of nikes and levi's
For this style casual boot, i always loved the puma flat2's. but i could never justify the price of those bad boys. Im thinking that you may also be interested in these...their alpinestars and of the same caliber and style as the others...

If you have a Cyclegear near you, have them order it (or order em online - you should be able to return in-store).
If you're looking for fit, they fit very similarly to the racing shoes in any of the major retailers (our local Macy's carries almost the full Puma line). The high top, super ugly racing shoe is probably the closest.
They're measured in UK sizes, and are pretty accurate to the US sizes, with the exception that UK sizes are measured 1/2 size smaller than US. So, I wear a 10.5 in my Adidas and Reeboks, but my Pumas are size 11.

If you are going to ride anyways you might as well do your mother a favor and wear decent gear. She would probably prefer that you rode a motorcycle to you riding a motorcycle AND wearing shitty gear.
This is the absolute minimal boot i would ever wear:
It isn't exactly loaded with advanced safety features, but at least it is over-the-ankle and has *some* minimal amounts of armor, and it just looks like a regular boot. I wouldnt hit that track in those, or even the twisties, but they are also waterproof and I do use them for commuting.
The Puma Flats are over the ankle, just like those. They're just not calf-height full race boots (which Puma also has now).
You should go check em out at Ducati Seattle - that was where I actually bought mine when they first came out. They have a couple of different designs, the Desmo being the full race boot.
