Default a few questions about gloves

ok so here's the deal... i've got a pair of joe rocket phonenix 3.0 gloves but the threads around the bottom of the gloves are coming apart and i have a hole in one of the fingers that seems to be getting bigger and bigger... so i'm looking for some new gloves and i've pretty much decided to get the alpinestars SMX-2 Air Carbon gloves... my first question is what do you guys think about these gloves and my next question is i wear a large in the joe rockets and they fit good but does that neccesarily mean that i wear the same size in the a*? i looked on there website but i didn't find a size chart pertaining to glove sizes... thanks in advance for any help.

I've got the grey carbon air's and they are falling apart also. The Silicone grip on the fingers that all the sites talk about has fallen off from every fringer, and there is a hole in the first layer of material in the palm on the right glove. This is all just from regular everyday riding, I've had them for less then a year. I'm looking at getting a pair of Komodos as my next glove. There was a thread with pictures of someone that crashed in the smx2, and I'm not sure if they held up as well as gloves are expected too.

I'm not sure I would trust them to hold up in a get-off, but:

I've been riding with the short Merc gloves for sometime now. They feel well constructed and...although I never intend to test time...I don't worry about their durability in a crash anymore than my Joe Rocket Speedmasters.

I love A*stars jackets. Not crazy about their gloves. Check out Helds and Helimots before you fork over the cash.

:Thread Jack: Has anyone ever heard about Shift racing gloves? Or more specifically M1 gloves? How do they hold up. There are no reviews.

I would steer away from the SMX-2 gloves because they are not gauntlet style.

I'm not a fan of Icon quality or protection features, but if there was one piece of Icon gear I would consider, it would be their Merc gauntlet glove.

On the topic of gauntlets and how they protect better than regular gloves I'm going to quote myself from the SV forum.

The post I'm quoting is in response to someone asking how a gauntlet protects better than a short glove...

"
The gauntlet isn't really supposed to protect your palm directly.

It provides you with a better and more secure fit, and it also prevents your jacket from riding up. A proper length jacket sleeve is supposed to be just SHORT of your wrist bone. Shorter than a street jacket. This length should be measured when on the bike with your forearm parallel to the ground.

The wrist strap on the glove goes around your wrist with the end of the jacket sleeve sitting behind it. The sleeve end (cuff) and the wrist strap on the glove do not share the same space on your arm/wrist. They are next to each other. That provides the more secure fit.

The gauntlet goes over the jacket sleeve to cover that 1/4 inch of exposed skin and prevents the jacket sleeve from riding up.

The gauntlet area is also more raised, allowing the gauntlet to take the abrasion and impact rather than your wrist strap. This also helps keep the glove on in a crash because otherwise there is a much higher chance your wrist strap could come undone.

Basically, gauntlet gloves keep your jacket on and your glove more secure. With a properly fitted jacket/glove combo, the glove has a lower chance of falling off and the jacket has a lower chance of riding up when compared with a short glove.

To get a good fit...imagine your wrist strap on the glove goes right above your wrist bone (towards your hand) and the jacket sleeve should end right before your wrist bone (towards your elbow and behind the glove strap). Your gauntlet should cover the exposed parts.

Also, with a short glove, you cannot wear a properly fitted jacket. The cuffs need to be loose enough to go over your glove, if it's that loose it WILL ride up in a crash. If it's fitted right then it is too tight to go over your glove, then you'll have your wrist exposed.

In conclusion...gauntlet gloves allow you to keep the glove on your hand and allow you to wear a properly fitted sport riding jacket...which in turn will not ride up your arm.

Phew...long post.

Look at the Joe Rocket GPX gloves. They are stitched on the outside of the gloves which makes them VERY comfortable. they also have a great feel on the inside. The leather between the fingers is perforated so they are good in hot weather.

Here are the pics of the A* SMX-2 Air Carbons I was wearing when I tucked the front and went off. I wear Joe Rocket Speedmaster or Marsee Racing gloves now.

You can wear em if ya want . . . .

I haven't gone down to test them yet, but I do wear the Joe Rockets.
They're comfortable, have some air flow with the knuckle gaurds and seem to be well padded etc.
But yeah, Jeez fishinride, that looks PAINFUL. You would been just as protected wearing golf gloves. OUCH

0o0o I was going to buy one pair of short and one pair of gauntlets. Was thinking about the smx-2 but you've convinced me not to. Looks paper thin.

That sucks dude. They are cheap gloves. The palm isn't real leather and it looks like that's where the major failure occurred.

I wear A* SPS gloves for summer riding. They only cost 10 bucks more and they're made a lot better IMO.
