Unhappy HELP!!!....busted collarbone

Hello all,

Last week I was trying to impress the ladies on the local ski slopes with a quadruple backflip ........ok ok i asctually just took a gnarly spill on some ice and fractured my clavicle. GREAAAT start to the impending riding season! They say at the Dr's I will be lucky if i heal quick that i may be able to ride in 8 weeks. ANYWAY.. I was wondeering if anyone else has had the same break and what their riding has been like? Also What do you all think is the best option as far as protective gear to go with the motorcycle jacket? i.e armor or specific collarbone protrection....THanks for the input.

p.s sorry for spelling errors i have to type one handed.

most sport riding jackets come with armor.

Good protective gear when out riding should include a full face helmet, leather jacket with armor, leather pants with armor, gauntlet style race gloves, riding specific boots.

Jacket and pants should zip together.

Specifically, collarbone armor is not common. However, elbow armor is supposedly also for protection against certain types of collarbone breaks. Some collarbone breaks are the result of the elbow hitting the ground, sending the impact up the arm, eventually breaking the collarbone. The armor in the elbow should reduce that type of injury by absorbing the impact from the elbow.

how bad did you break it??? I mean, I broke my collarbone as well, but was back on the bike in a little less than 5 weeks. This was after I KILLED my bike. Unless you have a displaced fracture, really shouldn't take 8 weeks to heal. You might want to get a second opinion.

thanks ts80 i will look into the extra elbow gear...as I already have jacket, boots, glove and pants for riding..oh and helmet!!

Silent- that is the best thing i have heard all week!! As far as the break goes it is semi-displaced but not in need of surgery. I have gone to 2 dr's so far and one saiid 12 week heal and the other said 6 weeks and both looked at me cross-eyed when i mentioned riding. so 8 weeks was a guess on my part.

5 weeks is def what i wanted to hear..at least there is still snow on the ground here so it makes this easier cuz we couldnt ride right now anyway.

Did feel any complications after u got back on the bike?

thanks again!!,
J

not really. I mean, yeah, it hurt like hell for a while, but I didn't expect any thing less than that. I found it hurt worse the first 2 weeks than anytime after.

Of course, I probably kept it in a constant state of pain seeing as how I was wrenching on my bike one handed

just continue to exercise the muscles with isometrics (increasing the contraction without shortening the muscle) and your arm will stay strong.
