PRODUCT TEST - Joe Rocket Razor Gloves
PRODUCT TEST - Joe Rocket Razor Gloves
This product as tested, the Joe Rocket Razor Gloves excelled during the 3 week test period. The testing included street and track riding. The blue / black pair of Razor Gloves are aesthetically appealing, very comfortable and functional.
The materials used in the construction of these gloves includes smooth-textured and suede-like synthetic leathers blended nicely with webbed Nylon mesh, Neoprene and stretchy Lycra materials. The glove construction also includes moulded Carbon Kevlar knuckle protection, reinforced palm protection, distal forearm protection, dual Velcro closures, a reflective stripe and proximal finger vents for the index, middle and ring fingers. The Razor Gloves are definitely the work of a mad scientist's experiment gone good as a result of the morphing of functional and stylish road race, crew and cruiser styled gloves. A glove that any metric or Buell pilot could be seen wearing on the street in complete confidence!
Fitment of the gloves were perfect. On the street or track for years we have used either Alpinestars or AGV hand protection. By far, the Joe Rocket Razor Gloves fit with precision which allowed greater feeling of the controls with very minimal compromise, good positive feedback and swell comfort. The sizing or cut of the gloves was as close to true as we have worn. The web-to-tip finger lengths were on the mark for us. There was an absence of extra material at the finger tips. The finger tip seams were soft and did not annoy the fingers while on the grips.
When putting on these gloves, the feel is soft and the fit cozy snug. The gloves are not bulky. Bulky to the point where you lack fine sensory input and feel of the controls like many others worn. The first paragraph of this report was done with the gloves on. Yes, as strange as it sounds, with the gloves on. A test to see how many double keystrokes this test would result. The keystroke outcome was very surprising.
Once the gloves are on, there are two Velcro closures that secure this gauntlet-style glove on your hand while covering any cuffed shirt, leather or garment jacket. The Velcro closures are positioned as follows. The first Velcro closure is just beyond the distal portion of the wrist and across the proximal metacarpals of the hand. This strap allows comfortable, secure adjustment while being form fitting. The second Velcro closure is located on the end of the gaunlet, distal end of the forearm just above the wrist. This second strap allows any protective leather suit, jacket or long-sleeved street garmet to be secured under the inside of the glove gauntlet.
The Razor Gloves protection is nice for the $60.00 price tag. First and foremost, the Carbon Kevlar knuckle protcetion not only looks cool but worked well when applied to the asphalt. Yes, these gloves met the asphalt god twice during the test period. Both left and right hand gloves were involved in 30mph+ low side impacts while conducting a Track Test of the Rialto Airport Speedway mini road coarse. Outcome, the middle and index knuckles took the majority of the impacts resulting in minor scratching and discoloring of the Carbon Kevlar surfaces. No chips, cracks or breaking of the knuckle surfaces occurred. Underneathe, the knuckles were slightly reddened as a result of the impacts but were free from serious or lingering minor injury.
Outside of the Carbon Kevlar protection, the Razor Gloves incorporates two thickly padded distal forearm pads to help absorb and transfer impact energies from the outer wrist area. It also has a metacarpal pad to help absorb and transfer these energies from the top of the hand. The fingers and thumbs also have extra padding primarily to result the same effect as the other pads while serving as additional abrasion protection. The palm also incorporates the very same padded protection as the fingers while utilizing a chamude in the middle and distal palm portions of the palm to allow the material to stretch during fitment and impact. These gloves held up extremely well even though the impacts were low to low-moderate speed incidents. Remember, incidents involving much higher speeds may or will not result in the same outcome.
Another cool feature, all puns intended, are the fresh air inlets on the index, middle and ring fingers of the Razor Gloves. These inlets worked well during warms days. Allowing fresh air to circulate across the fingers and across the finger webs to minimize perspiration. These inlets are way cool. They are constructed of a soft poly or ABS-like material that are well-stitched into the multiple glove layers. The inlets also include a fine screen or netting inside of each inlet to restrict foreign objects from entering the glove fingers. Very nice if you encounter a swarm of bees or any other pest while riding. The only drawback to these functional inlets, the cold! These gloves are not recommended for cold weather riding unless you are Ice Cube or Mr. Freeze.
In closing, Big thanks to the Rialto Airport Speedway for the facilities, Ritchie Campbell of Big Luckies Sign Co. for the glove donation (originally from Sullivan Distributing), members of Team No Limit Racing, Inc.and Joe Rocket for a cool product that will be missed on the racks and will be used time and time again. Warm weather of course! These Joe Rocket Razor Gloves are a sound $60.00 investment for your safety, comfort, coolness factor and definitely a good bang-for-the-buck! Following our test the gloves remained in near perfect condition with minor blemishes to the Carbon Kevlar knuckles, left and right inclusive.
These gloves are in short supply at limited authorized dealers. This glove is no longer on the product line-up for 2005 by Joe Rocket. I will research the most comparable or replacement glove to the Razor through Joe Rocket and provide additional follow-up to this cool product as we have experienced. Personal results will vary!

Sorry, but those "mittens" look like they'd only offer very limited protection in a get-off. Otherwise, they sound great - thin, pliable, and comfortable. Like Playtex, so thin you can pick up a dime.
