I'm a soon-to-be newbie. I'll be getting my first bike in June (06 SV650S). I decided to go ahead and get the gear first. Also, I'll be taking the MSF in May.
Yea I read that too, about the stell toed boots, but I need to buy some more. At least they are over the ankle, but i want some better ones. A real riding boot
(sidi, alpinestars) will look weird in a size 13.....lol
Don't be to concerned with the steel toe boots, MYTH BUSTERS did a show on that and it took an incredible amount of force to cause injury. I think they dropped a 400 lb weight on them and it didn't bend the steel. Like the other guy said if it bends this metal you've got other problems.

Aerostitch 2 pc, Arai Signet, Lee Parks Deerskins, Kobe boots, and a Bohn back protector. Winter time, add Widder electric vest and gloves. Below 20 degrees add Bikers Comfort windproof longjohns and socks.
Helmet: Icon Alliance
Jacket: Fieldsheer MotoBar leather in red
Gloves: JR Pheonix or Reflex Gear (can't remember model name)
Pants: Whatever jeans I have on as long as there are no holes or freing.
Kicks: Typically, over ankle CAT leather work boots
I'm looking at getting a pair of leather pants with racing zip attachment. Also looking at various boots, spec. a track worthy, waterproof boot with replacable sliders. Diadora and A* looks like it too me so far in the $200-ish range.
