I just replaced mine first off go with the x-ring it's a little pricey but worth it (it helps retain the oil between the links better), and look for sprockets that are made of steel they might be a little heavier but they last in the end, I did the mistake of buying an alluminum sprocket and it was toast after 15k miles. I've heard of people getting less miles than that out of them. umm other than that it's just brand preference, I replaced mine with a D.I.D. 530 chain x-ring with steel parts unlimited steel sprockets 3k miles ago. Oh yea and the teeth are 15 front and 40 rear unless you want to go 2 up on the rear for more acceleration, but it'll throw your speedo and odometer off more so than it already may be (sport bikes tend to be 10% off reading high give or take a few %) unless you get a speedo healer. And that's all from me.

I'm pretty sure stock is 16 - 40 and uses a 104 link chain. You can probably stick to the stock length chain.

I think the 02 and up carry 106 links. Not sure about the 00-01 models (think 102 links). But You can use the stock chain for a 15-40 or 42. Will just slide the wheel a few mm forward/backward.

went with a did 530 zvm2, very nice chain indeed. also 15/42 sprocket change. the stock chain does work just fine with that sprocket combo and sorry guys but the link count is 106 stock (sp2 vs sp1 is 2 link diff). get a friend that can count that high to help ya next time.

it really helped the performance of the bike. i just thought it pulled hard before!

really needed the speedohealer also. made a -15.4% correction.

Verified, 106 links stock on SP2 ('02-'06). This link count will work for 16-40 through 15-42 (might be too short for a 16-42) . I just put an EK MVXZ 530 "Quadra-X ring" chain on mine with a 15/42. The wheel is near the front of adjustment, but the chain will break in a bit.
