How we doing, ladies? Just joined the group and am loving it so far. So here's my story...I got my riding license about 2 1/2 years ago and have been riding an '02 Kawi Ninja ZX6R. My ex bought it off ebay for me to learn on from a guy in the NY area, and I bought it from him a couple years ago. It has a few cosmetic issues, but she's still a beauty. Well, the bike was at my sister's house last spring. She has seen me move it and figured she could easily do it as well. Well, she tried...and my baby fell on her! She's ok (my sis), but the bike was on its side for a while as she was scrambling to find a neighbor to help her get it back up. Well, my ex offered to take a look at the bike because she hasn't started since the "topple". We got into a fight, so I told him to put the bike back together and I'd just take her to a shop. Well, he did a half-assed job and put her back together alright...and handed me the box of extra parts. So my project this summer will be learning how to fix my own bike because I'm afraid any shop I take her to will try to rip me off since I'm a chic. I talked to some people about what's going on with bike, and apparently the floater in one of the cylinders might be stuck, causing the engine to flood with gasoline. He said I could prop the bike up and gently tap underneath it with a rubber mallot to try to knock it loose. Does anyone have any other suggestions...? I'll post on the repair thread on the regular forum as well.
Good Luck with fixing the bike. Sorry, I don't have any suggestions for ya, but will say, "Good For You" that you are taking it on for yourself and I'm sure you will learn and be extra proud for doing it by yourself. I'm not to the point of tearing into the motor or carbs of my bike, but will be someday.
The floater Is the float valve in the carb, if it sticks the engine can flood with fuel , To start with it I would sugest you get a repair manual first. Start by checking the operation of the petcock (fuel valve on the gas tank) Next remove the spark plugs & crank the motor over several times to make sure there is no fuel in the cylinders. This is a good time to replace the plugs. You can try draining the carbs 2-3 time to flush them out (should be a 10mm bolt on the bottom of the carb bowl) If that doesn't work Then you will have to remove the carbs and clean them After you are done I would change the oil, because it may have fuel in it from the leaking carb.
Welcome If He Gave you a box of parts and you have never worked on your bike I would get a Guy Friend to take the bike for you to a shop, It would cost you less in the long run. I changed the plugs in my, with the help of my Hubby we went online and found the How To for my bike. Hey just a t
thought. Good Luck in Getting her back on the road.
That really stinks....
Since you are in Rockford, if you really need help-contact the guys at Sportsman's Park Yamaha in Delavan....I know you have a Kawi, but these guys are true blue and will NOT screw you. We have quite a relationship with them. Hopefully you can do it, but if need be I would recommend these guys without batting an eye. Good luck to ya!
Hi, Welcome. I am pretty new also. I have been riding for about 2 years, however I have not started my bike in a year because I just had my son. Quick question -- do you have to start it every now and then to make sure things are still working?
If the issue with this the carb, do not even try to do it yourself. Carbs are tricky sons of bitches and should not be toyed with unless you know what you are doing.

Welcome welcome chicky!! Not saying that you can't do it yourself, but it would be a major pain in the you know what to try and learn how to do it over night. I was thinking since you're from IL check out the IL forum and see if one of those nice boys who knows their stuff might come over and help you put it back together, that way its cheaper and you can learn how to work on it !!
Take care and good luck,
Courtney
Second - when the bike was tipped over, the fuel in the float bowls was tipped into the carb chokes (through the pilot jet) and then into the cylinder. In other words, when a bike tips for any period of time, it floods by nature. So (... and not that I know anything about restarting crashed bikes - ahem ahem... ) the solution might be to just run the bike on the starter motor (crank it over) at full throttle for 30-45 seconds. This should clear out the combustion chambers of excess gasoline and the bike might come to life on it's own - no shop visit required.
Third - If the float bowls are stuck (a not unlikely scenario), then unsticking them is pretty simple if you know your way around carbs. I'm not saying that you should attempt the procedure if you're unsure - but rather some private party that's farmiliar with carbs could sort he problem in short order... saving you the need to visit a dealer.
I'd post up in the Wisconsin board, too. I know there are a few people near the Janesville/Beloit area that might be able to help you out... who knows, you might find a replacement for your hamfisted ex.
Thanks for all the suggestions. I'll probably get a guy friend who's knowledgable and look on very closely ;-D.
You all know how to make a new member feel welcome.
