^I have to agree with this...I would never buy a helmet to accomodate my hair. But I don't have the bunching up of it down to a science. I always liked having the braids hang out. Race spectators really like it. They actually look for it now. They look for the braids rather than my number!
well, yeah, my head starts hurting after I have had that helmet and that hair tucked in. I bought this helmet 5 years ago and at that time, I wore my hair inside. Now, I get sick of it cause it hurts after I've been riding for like 3-4 hours with my husband, but I cant do anything about it (except buy a new helmet) cause when he rides over 100 mph if my hair is out of the helmet, the damn thing moves
Depends on how long your hair is... mine is down to my waist and I keep it tucked in my jacket or in a high bun right under the edge of the helmet.
^I wouldn't buy a helmet to fit your hair inside it, that's just not safe plus it's irritating and looks worse when you're done riding. I guess it really depends on how long it is. You can buy one of those leather straps you clip on around a braid, but I just keep it in my jacket. If it's too short to stay in, I suggest a silk scarf or a bandana. Good luck!
The way I wear my hair inside the helmet doesn't hurt or feel weird. It's not long enough to stay in my jacket. And my helmet fits just fine.
I have been wearing it this way for 17 years. But it's all a matter of personal preference, of course.
The different brands/models of helmets fit differently. I have an "Arai head", but the Astral doesn't fit me well at all. I definitely don't think you should get a helmet one size up to accomodate your hair, and that's not what I was suggesting. The same way you have to figure which type of helmet fits your head is how you should approach fitting one if you are going to wear your hair up inside it.
Lucky you, BB, for knowing how to braid your hair. I could never get that down. A twist is much easier for me.
I didnt know that. Cool, this is one more reason to buy a new helmet
Yup, Arai recommends replacing your helmet every five years, just to be on the safe side.
Also keep in mind that you do not have to settle for a helmet that does not fit properly. We all have different shapes to our heads. Arai offers a perfect example for this. Arai makes three different "models". Quantum, Signet and Astral.
Quantum and Astral helmets are more round shaped...for people with round heads. The Signet is made for an oval shape. So those unique people like me with oval heads have an option. The shape of your head determines how the helmet fits. If you try various helmets and they just don't seem right, check out the Arai's. At least by trying them on you can get an idea of what shape your head is so that you can get the right helmet. Before I tried on a Signet I thought I was destined for an uncomfortable helmet that did not fit quite right.....I love my Arai.
Of course I have to give props to Shoei as well. My dirt helmet fits perfectly too. But I am not sure the model nor do I know if their street models fit the same way. At any rate, be choosey with your helmet and how it fits. Take a measurement of your head so you can go by manufacturer's guidelines for sizing. Not all salespeople are looking out for you. The pads will eventually "squish" and the helmet will get "larger" just through general use.
If you have any questions please do not hesitate to ask!!! We are here to help!

OMG....I have oval shaped head too (oval was that longer shape, right?). This is HJC helmet and a lot of times (when my hair is in) it kinda pokes me on the forehead and even then it moves a bit up and down. I have to go try on those Arai helmets and then if they are good, get one from the internet, they are cheaper
You know I always thought that Billy Joel was a great inspriration to us ugly knuckle-draggin mofo's when he managed to snag Christie Brinkley. Granted he had tons of money, wrote her songs and things, but still... some kind of hope.
Now you can throw Will into that same category of giving hope. Now whenever children on the streets cry after seeing my mug I can remind myself that if Billy and Will can do it, so can I!

I have to say . . . I like that smile in the last pic. Sorry Officer, but it's a nice smile.
Thank you! I am so flattered!

I can't complain. I drugged, cajoled, coerced, and blackmailed a pretty thing into marrying me. Then two adorable little girls came along that think I'm pretty much superman, batman, and spiderman all rolled into one so she can't get rid of me that easily anymore.
So if you can't do it on looks or talent, then whack 'em over the head and drag them back to the cave before they know any better.
