Default Thanks

Well thank you for letting me join, now I have a few newbie questions:

Am I the only retard that was scared out of my mind to get out on the road?
Example: When you leave our sub, the speed limit is immediately 50mph. I finally did it yesterday but it scared the shit out of me. Is that a normal?

My hubby is really great about giving me direction, but I want to know if this blind fear is going to pass?

I was a little nervous the first time I rode by myself on a highway, but I had been riding as a passenger enough that being on a bike in crazy traffic wasn't really new to me. Then again, I was very young when I started and thought I was invinsible, which helped with the fear factor.

You just need to get to the point where operating the bike is second nature to you. That way you'll be able to focus most of your attention on your surroundings, not your shifting or braking, etc. The only way to get there is ride time, experience. Ride as often as you can in a calmer setting (like your neighborhood, or roads with lower speed limits). When you feel at home on your bike there, then venture out into the wider world.

thanks, I have been riding around for about 2 weeks doing about 25mph but that is between two parking lots with no traffic. I am comfy on the bike, but I guess getting the bike upto the speed of the road was what scared me. I am gonna try again today. I wish we had two bikes, then the hubby could ride with me. O-well.

Since you said you will be getting your own bike soon, in the meantime why not have your hubby ride you around on the faster roads and highways, in all kinds of weather and traffic? I learned SO MUCH from riding as a passenger and paying close attention to what the driver was doing in different situations.

By all means keep practicing riding on your own on the easier roads, but use this opportunity to gain valuable knowledge watching an experienced rider at work. It really does help. Once you get your own bike, you won't want to be a passenger anymore.

I do ride with the hubby, and he goes pretty fast on the same road I was on, I try to see what he is doing but he has a big head Sometimes I can't see what he is doing. I am very comfy being a passenger. I think the bike it just too big for me, it is a damn 900. I have been looking at 600's and I love the looks of the CBR. I guess my first order of business is getting my road skills test under my belt, before I get my own bike.

You mean your endorsement? Well, yes get that or at least a permit. But if you've been riding your man's bike without a permit/endorsement anyway you may as well get your own bike right away. It's better to learn on a bike that feels more comfortable to you.

Do take the MSF course asap though and get your endorsement. The course will give you loads of confidence and improve your basic riding skills immeasurably. The endorsement will keep you out of legal trouble.

Absolutely!!!!^^^^

MSF makes a HUGE difference.

The blind fear doesn't "magically" disappear, but through gradual regression it does fade. Practice, practice, practice.........that's all there is to it.
