Usually the thread title is supposed to reflect what you'd like to talk about. I believe you might have more honestly named this one "Obama Slow to Allow Gay Soldiers to Mention It" or something else related to whom you actually wanted to talk about.
I never understood why this was such a big deal. It's not like the flood gates are going to open at the stroke of Hussein's pen and a mad rush of pink-spandex-and tube-top-wearing gays will start spilling into the armed forces. Keep your dick in your pants when you're on duty and do what you want when off duty. God help you if you get caught limp-wristing your sidearm in front of the enemy.

The people who are afraid are the ones with the false images of gay people trying to have sex with them the minute they enter the room because they are the same sex.
It's funny because they wouldn't have sex with someone just because they walked into the room, but gays don't care who they have sex with.
It was ever only a big deal to people who believe homosexuality is sinful. Unfortunately, there are more of them then there are G&L people.
Disagree. It was the homophobes and testosterone types that didn't want gays ruining the 'image' of our military. IMO anyone who wants to serve should have the right to do so, and should be treated with equal respect.
I have heard plenty of ppl ranting about this over the years, and never had a single person mention 'sin'. It was always 'I have to shower with those guys' and 'it makes us look weak', etc.

This. I was in the Navy when this first became an issue with the Clinton administration. I was one of about three guys that didn't give a shit if there were gays on the ship. But what I heard was a bunch of machismo kids going into great detail about all the pussy they got last weekend all of a sudden getting really bashful about having to hear anything at all about teh geyh buttsexors.
If you are willing to fight for your country, then you should be allowed to do so.
The next hurdle will be how openly gay people will be treated in boot camp. Will there be a greater amount of "punishment" brought upon them from their drill instructors? I would hope not.
