The last president wasted about 6 years by making that detour into Iraq.

The cabbies were Ethiopian and Nigerian mostly last time I visited New York. I guess the Muslims who drove them fifteen years ago moved on to 7-11 operations. When I drove one for a year or so almost 30 years ago, there were a whole lot of Russian cabbies. Did Russians run 7-11s in New Jersey for a while?

For what it's worth, the Somali and Ethiopian populations of Seattle are pretty big, and they seem to be able to drive cabs AND run 7-11s at the same time. Different individuals, but all from the same populations. I guess it's a sign of rapid assimilation into the American dream out here.

It just occurred to me that these people who have 7/11 franchises put up a potful of cash to get them, IIRC. I think that's a pretty good indicator of their confidence in the system. And in their willingness to work.

It has to be higher than the wankers here who spend endless hours internet bitching (on the boss's nickel to boot.)

Funny you should say that. I recently went on a 'reminiscing' road trip by myself back to my childhood town. San Antonio. When I was 19 there I worked at a convenience store across the street from the apartments where I lived with my girlfriend (which later became my wife when I went into the Air Force). I recalling making about $2.15/hr.

It had been 32 years since I'd been in that store but it looked about the same. I walked around and looked at the cooler I used to stock and the rows of junk food, etc. A very strange feeling.

I walked up to the counter to checkout with my diet Coke. Smiled and told the Hispanic lady behind the counter that I used to work in that very spot 32 years ago. There was a pause and with a very serious face she said, "I don't think they are hiring."

After all the places I've been in those years and things I've accomplished from those humble beginnings, I don't recall ever laughing that hard.

Took my Coke and got in the TT and went on to the other landmarks in my life but will never forget the laugh.
