This was brought up before. People pissed because they were paying more in taxes when they bought gas hogs, than those who bought economical cars. I am not sure how that could ever get through in today's green conscious society. One of the incentives for buying better gas cars (other than $4 gas) is that you are paying less taxes.

I understand the dilemma the solons in Salem are facing.
More drivers using more fuel efficient cars will use less gasoline per mile driven, which means declining revenue to maintain the Oregon highway system, whose costs are pretty much fixed. They need more revenue.
Solution: Raise the gasoline tax. Period. Higher gasoline costs will stimulate sales of fuel efficient vehicles. Call it a "compensation" tax.
What the hell is the big deal? Why all this Big Brother, hi-tech junk?

So the solution to everything is raise the taxes? If you are driving an old pick up because you are just getting by, how is higher gas taxes going to get you to buy a new fuel efficient vehicle? Michigan wanted to raise the fuel tax 75% to stop people from driving. People still drive, they just spend less money on other things. The NY Post had a story years ago about the massive tax increase on cigarettes. They figured they would make it so expensive, people would quit. Viola! Healthier New Yorkers. Problem is when they looked into it, low income smokers were still buying cigarettes, but their kids were getting 1 meal a day. And since you are raising fuel taxes, one could assume you also mean diesel, so we all get to pay more to cover the increased cost of trucks moving goods to consumers, wether you drive a Prius or Surburban. And more for food to cover the increase in diesel for farm tractors. When gas soared this year, meat, milk, eggs, etc... are rose as well. I see your thought Fly, I just don't agree with the execution. Don't you think fuel taxes are high enough already? In PA we are at 50.7 cents a gallon.

Holy fucking shit I agree with the Tiger on a tax statement for once (thats funny) and damn that was 100 percent spot on.
How about this for once, Making the government spend your money wiser? God the amount of money that is pisssed away is unbelievable to say the least.
Its also not the governments job (not ours anyhow) to decide every single damn thing we should do, (stop smokers) none of their fucking business just as an example. California proposed this as well, not sure where it went, but I fail to see the incentive to buy a more economical car if you are just going to be taxed the equivilent anyhow.
Grab the pitchforks and torches folks.
Edit: it really bothers me that after the effects of high gas prices (where we sit right now) liberals are again pushing for it. Somehow in their minds the government needs your money worse than you do. I do not follow that logic on any level.
Ronald Reagan was the American father of user fees. This sort of idea was born between his ears in the notion that people who didn't use government services shouldn't pay for their availability.

Its not the fault of the troops and I think they should always have more than enough equipment, food, etc., but some people would be amazed at the perfectly good stuff they throw away on military posts.
Don't even get me started on how much money could be made if they did away with some of the demil programs.
I (as probably everyone is aware) have had more than enough of government. I think that given where we are now, the first place that they should look for more money for essentials like courts, law enforcement, and critical infrastructure, is through getting rid of the 90% of government that is NOT essential (and is un-Constitutional to boot).
As a matter of principle, funding roads by fuel taxes or vehicle taxes is a good approach, provided that such taxes go directly and ONLY to the infrastructure used by the vehicles being taxes (and not for even public transportation or other peripheral uses, much less for the usual dump it into [or "borrow" and somehow never manage to pay it back] the general fund and use it for all the wrong stuff they oughtn't be doing at all).
Either way, the economy is plenty shaky enough now. It will be quite a while before we get ourselves dug out again, and any extra burdens on the economy should be avoided. Adding fuel taxes will not help this.
