Wow, that sure makes the righties defensive. I had no idea righties imagined this was a secret.
Did Sarah Palin really flunk out of college? Why am I not surprised?

I'm not a "righty," and how is pointing out that I agree with some of the criticisms laid upon McCain/Palin, but think that it doesn't have to do with race make me defensive? I fail to see the correlation? Unless you weren't referring to me...

well, it has a lil bit to do with the topic. the only real way for someone to understand it fully, they would have to do more than a day in anothers shoes to really understand privillage. and most blacks have accepted this . seeing that there is nothing that can really be done about it.

My brother from another mother, I'm a lover, not a fighter. But in 8th grade I did try out for the wrestling team, and damn man that is one workout. I was so tired that I had little if no energy to wrestle to see who was going to take on the kid from the other school that day.

Best conditioning you could ever have.
Don't even want to think about "Ground and Pound". Sound like some got what was coming to them.

There will be no end to racial "privilege", one way or another, until there is no political/sociological distinction between different races- which unfortunately, will probably not happen in our lifetimes.

The wrestling coach in high school used to let us play basketball to stay in shape. After a couple hours, the score was usually something like 4-2, there were basketballs stuck in the wires above the backboard, and a slimy combination of blood and sweat all over the place. It is amazing how basketball gets transformed when a bunch of wrestlers try to play.
As far as white privilege and racism against black people, it has been a real balance in my family, since we are both white and black. As the white father of a mixed race kid, I have wondered how to explain the racism he will inevitably feel off and on to him. We live in a very liberal, accepting neighborhood with all kinds of people, but the world isn't all like where we live. His high school is very inclusive and likewise very unlike the world he is likely to encounter off and on during his life. Because he is mixed race and quite pale, he isn't specifically black, and he isn't really part of the whole African-American experience. He isn't completely white, either, although a lot of his closest friends are either white or Asian. He is thinking about Boston for college, and if there's a more tribal city in the whole country, I don't know what it is. Anyway, there's a different spin on the subject. The double standard is still very much alive and well. We have experienced it in odd ways and in unexpected places. It is always a slap in the face.
One thing about being white- you can spend the whole day not thinking about what color your skin is. If you are black, it's a rare day when somebody doesn't remind you about it. Our son was surprised when one of his friends said "you really are black, aren't you" right out of the blue one day. He hadn't thought about it much. Here it comes. I hope we have done an OK job of preparing him for what's coming.

Yeah, it was interesting seeing the different subsections of the hardcore community in Columbus react to black kids. The sharps, of course, were totally inclusive, the white power kids, of course, were not. It was a fun scene until it got truly violent. Saw a guy get curbed and another one stabbed and at that point I was done with it. It became more about fighting than music and community. Same story that played out everywhere in the eighties and nineties in the hardcore scene.
