Heh. He's a Shiia. We've calmed the Sunni areas, where the people have seen the wisdom of spurning their Al Qaeda nut cases in favor of their economic self-interest. (Perhaps they've always been more practical than the Shiia.)
The Shiia-led gov't wants us outta there so they can go to work again on the Sunnis.
Looks like this might just turn out to be an important announcement both for the future of Iraq and for exposing the entire phony premise of the Bush/McCain position.
We are there at the invitation of the Iraqi government. This is a sovereign nation. Twelve million people went to the polls to approve a constitution. It's their government's choice. If they were to say, leave, we would leave.
I wonder if he's gonna actually follow through on what he said?
Question: "What would or should we do if, in the post-June 30th period, a so-called sovereign Iraqi government asks us to leave, even if we are unhappy about the security situation there?"
McCain's Answer: "Well, if that scenario evolves than I think it's obvious that we would have to leave because -- if it was an elected government of Iraq, and we've been asked to leave other places in the world. If it were an extremist government then I think we would have other challenges, but I don't see how we could stay when our whole emphasis and policy has been based on turning the Iraqi government over to the Iraqi people."
(PITTSBURGH) – The U.S. will withdraw its troops from Iraq “with honor, not according to a set timetable,” John McCain said today, in response to Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki issuing a statement that said the two countries should “put a timetable on their withdrawal."
Speaking of the surge, I've noticed that McCain is now taking credit for it. They're calling it "John McCain's Surge." But wasn't that Patreaus' plan, based on his published writings? I think McCain plagiarized the surge. Maybe Patreaus should have trademarked it.

We are gonna McCain, the plagiarizing SOB! The Very Serious Organization (tm) plagiarized The Surge before he did, and we won't take it lying down! And even if we didn't, we are going to claim it, and sue anyway. Or at least hold a press conference. Or something.
