Barack Obama has taken a stroll this week away from traditional liberal political positions, his path toward the political center marked by artful leaps and turns.
Are you saying this about Obama?
And what does that have to do with changing your platform?
"A compassionate conservative is someone who believes that conservatism and compassion complement each other, particularly in opposition to common conservative party platform planks such as advocating laissez-faire economic policies. A compassionate conservative might see the social problems of the United States, such as health care or immigration, as issues that are better solved through cooperation with private companies, charities and religious institutions rather than directly through government departments."

It is called changing the subject. A oft failed yet frequently employed liberal tactic when they are uncomfortable with said subject.

Unlike the "conservative" tactic of making up stuff and lying.
The rush back to the center is typical of all campaigns. The primary is all about being more extreme than the next guy, and then the general is all about being mostly in the center. McCain is having some difficulties firing up the wingnut fringe, so he is going to have to convince the center he isn't as far right as he really is. The wingnut fringe may never warm to him, and it is going to be a problem for him.
Obama has a slightly different problem in that the fuzzball left is going to be very unhappy with him, because he had them all fired up and now he is moving more to where the rest of the country is. I am personally happy about it, because I live more in the center than on the fuzzball fringe, and I am especially happy to see him backing off some of his more populist economic fantasies. I don't see McCain backing off some of his more extreme positions, since he is still trying to shore up support to the right. His brown nosing in the evangelical community may get him some votes, but it will also lose him centerist votes.
The process is set up for this kind of thing, and the caterwauling from Sam Brownback is a perfect example. The GOP will be attempting to paint Obama as a flip flopper because of his moves back to the center, and they are busy doing the playground taunting routine that worked so well for dumb'ya against Kerry. This time, it may make them look as childish as it really is. I hope even the stupid wing figures out we don't need kindergardeners running the country and tosses these clowns.

Both candidates are flip floppers, what else is new? Of course Obama has to move closer to the center, it will be interesting to see how he pulls this off without upseting the far left loons who are so in love with him.

I am actually quite a bit happier with him now that he is moving away from some of his more populist stances. He showed signs of it when he didn't back the boneheaded fuel tax holiday idea.
What intrigues me is McCain is still lurching to the right off and on, even though he has the nomination.

i'd like him alot more if he'd stay around the center. slightly liberal doesn't bother me too much....slightly conservative neither. extreme in either direction is scary though....and till now, there's very few more liberal than barrack.
