Deal reached on surveillance bill
Posted: 01:18 PM ET
WASHINGTON (CNN) — A new bipartisan deal that clears the way for a sweeping overhaul of domestic wiretapping laws will let telecommunications companies escape lawsuits over the Bush administration’s warrantless surveillance program, congressional leaders announced Thursday.
Republicans have pushed strongly for protecting companies that cooperated with the post-9/11 surveillance program, but Democrats have managed to kill previous efforts to revise the Watergate-era law governing domestic spying.
House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer, D-Maryland, said the bill is “not perfect,” but “strikes a sound balance” between intelligence-gathering and court oversight.
But the plan drew immediate criticism from the American Civil Liberties Union and the Electronic Frontier Foundation, which said it would effectively gut court oversight of domestic spying.
– CNN’s Pam Benson contributed to this report.
Great, the assholes finally agree on something...and it circumvents the legal system so they can monitor us more closely.
Exactly why do you think it's great news? The telecoms broke the law by complying with the illegal data mining/data capture requests. Immunity from prosecution undermines established criminal law, and sets a truly bad precedent. Unless, of course, "you have nothing to hide", right?

LOL! Must make you Libs angry. So it's good legislation based on that alone.
Glad you're in charge of congress!
If you don't understand why they did this, then you have no business trying to keep our collective asses safe or picking someone as prez'nit to do it for you.
So what does Obama think? Did he even vote on this?

I'm far from a liberal, but I have a VERY fundamental problem with the Government taking away our Civil Rights i.e Privacy.
As it is we have allowed to the Government to trample the Constitution for far to long. But a lot of that we owe to our own ignorance. I get into way to many arguments about how exactly we legally declare war.

Exactly. This should piss anybody off regardless of their political stance unless they are Authority loving stooges who celebrate and say "Yay my side won".

The biggest problem is just as in the fingerpinting thread, and some other threads where the government goes to far, children today and even some adults just do not see a problem with it, its ok to be monitored "cause I have done nothing wrong"

I thought it was just a fluke when I was agreeing with you the other day
(50% that is) and it's happened again.

Right and here we have the DoD and Walmart of all fucking companies pushing to implant us with computer chips so they can REALLY keep up on us. Any motherfucker comes at me with a computer chip I'm getting out my passport and getting on a plane, one way.
But I agree with you here though, security at the cost of the rights this county was founded is not worth the cost. At that point we stop being American. I really think half of it is simple fear-mongering. If we are scared of the world constantly, we allow the Government to expand it's power (as it has been doing) because its a scary world out there and only Uncle Sam can save us from it. What complete and utter bullshit.
