I've got no problems with Rev. Jeremiah Wright
After catching some of his comments with Bill Moyers and his speach to the NAACP he seems like an intelligent, funny, and honest person. Interesting how things taken out of context can paint a bad picture.
Wright said that people who had accused him of being unpatriotic were wrong.
"I served six years in the military. Does that make me patriotic? How many years did Cheney serve?" -Jeremiah Wright

Agreed. I don't agree with him about anything. But anyone should be able to realize there is a vested interest in quoting short snippets of his sermons.

It was a non-issue for me then and it's a non-issue for me now.

Far as I know, Wright isn't running for office.
Far as what kind of preacher he is, if I was a religious church-goin' guy, I'd rather listen to one of his sermons than one of those mind-numbing, boring-to-the-point-of-suicide, stone-faced preachers who drone on and on in a monotone, quoting from the bible every line because they have no original thoughts of their own.
I like what Wright said to the interviewer when asked about the sermon from which they took the 30-second soundbite... "Did you hear the whole sermon? No? That negates that question."

Well I posted this because it seems that so far this is the worst thing about Barack Obama. I think it's looking for anything, no matter how stupid, to criticize Obama for. Even Hillary Clinton can't help but bring up Rev. Wright.
The funny thing for me is that he is not so crazy and "America Hating" as the Right wing Media lets on.
Certainly tame compared to Hagey.

You aren't thinking like a goper.
Let me tell you what they are going to say.
"Yeah so what he served 6 years, i didn't serve a single day in the military but i still think he's an america hater!"
Look......dealing with your average goper is a non starter. But I do concurr, I don't see the problem. Not like he insighted a riot or anything like that!

Yep, I agree. What I meant when I said he isn't running for office is how they try to make it seem like voting for Obama would somehow put Wright in the whitehouse too.
It's really not that clever a ploy, but apparently there's enough stupid people around to fall for it.
And I also agree that the more I see of Wright, the more I like the guy. Even though I'm not a Christian and most preachers really put me off, Wright has a dry sense of humor and a straight-talking, in-your-face realism that I can respect. He's no hate-monger... Hagey and Robertson are hate-mongers.

Wow...you people REALLY frighten me. A man goes to the church that has beliefs closest in line with his own. And I am by no means an expert on Mr. Wright, I can certainly say I disagree with what I have heard. And not really just a mere disagreement, but to the point of amazement that people like him even exist! Just to think like him would require YEARS of brainwashing. "Not God bless America, God F*CK America" Now if my pastor said that, I think I would be making quite a stink about it. So, can we honestly trust someone who sits in the pew and let his pastor spew out this garbage?

That quote is taken entirely out of context. What he obviously meant was America makes God so randy he literally wants to bend America over and make it his bitch, and that if we're really lucky we'll get some holy bling from putting out on the first date.
That's what I got out of it, anyway.

I think I understand. My catholic priest said about two years after 9/11 (earliest he wouldn't have been hung by a mob of patriots I'm sure) that he was sick and tired of all the "God Bless America" stickers on the back of every damn SUV. He said we should think twice about this, and that our mentality should be something more like "America Bless God." That maybe there is something wrong with our outlook, and that we can't expect to go about doing whatever we want (in our daily lives or as a nation), and just expect him to bestow endless blessing just because "it's America damnit."
He has a point, if more religious folk actually walked the walk, we would have a lot more reason to expect a higher beings good graces. I think it's so funny that patriotic fever has gotten to the point that if you don't shout at god what he should do, then you are unpatriotic. Does anyone even understand the phrase "God Bless America?" Really, you can't expect god to do so just because you say so, like everything else in life, you have to do your part. Stop telling god what to do, and make your country a better place.
Mr. Wright has the right to free speech, and I honestly applaud him for having the courage to tell us we shouldn't blindly follow the crowd. Really, who's brainwashed? The ignorant flag wavers that don't do a thing to merit such a US centristic attitude, or the person that says something's wrong here? I may not agree with the manner in which he went about it, but that can be taken out of context. Any good presenter (business, politcal or other) knows he has to consider the audience. Hell I bet half the posters on this board couldn't effectively communicate three points to a group of teenagers, yet they wish to tell a black preacher how he should talk to his congregation. Go to hell you civil rights strippin idiots.
Obama wouldn't be running for president if he didn't honestly believe we could do better as a nation, that's what counts in this whole mess.

Now put him in a hood and white robe and tell me about free speech. Not standing up for the KKK or any other racist organization, but you and the two biggest racist in the country "Jesse anb Sharpton" would be calling for his head if it was the other way around.

actually no, my priest is white, had no problem listening to him
learn to read a damn post, and stop clumping me in with the libs please
I clearly stated I don't like what he said, don't like the way he went about it, but he's free to say it, and may very well have a point. Dude, I live in Texas, I hear white folks say shit 50 times worse on a daily basis. The only difference is they feel entitled to spout this jazz because they are on the right side, because they care about their country, and they're patriots.
Truth is both sides have just as much of a right, so why condemn one just because he's not on your bandwagon, or just because he stands up and says, "something's wrong here." He probably cares more about this country than your average ignorant hick, otherwise he wouldn't give a shit about telling us how we are in the wrong.
I grew up ten minutes east of Vidor, TX, big KKK hangout. They used to march on the Orange County Courthouse, I know all about free speech, and it's many different brands, some are more productive and valuable than others, all are protected, regardless of public opinion. Thanks for proving my point.
