Forbidden debate
Ok you guys, I know Im going to get blasted for this one, but its nontheless an important question. How did life originate? By pure accident or by intelligent design?
Keep in mind: Darwin's theory doesn't explain the origin of life, only the theory of evolution that took over AFTER the first cell existed. So, if you are an athiest and a die hard evolutionist, you still have to ponder how it all started in the first place.
I've even heard people use Darwins theory to explain the origin of life this way: Aliens created the first single cell organism and planted it on Earth.
So, even evolutionist will believe in intelligent design...so long as it isn't God. Aliens, but not God?

To say "its god" moronic. Nothing points to it being god other then stupid man-made religions. Its better to leave it up in the air.
However my money is on there being no god whatsoever.
PS: the sad part, is that there is more tangible proof to the belief in aliens then there is to the belief in god.

If there were aliens, it wouldn't really be the origin now would it?

WTF kind of debate is it when you offer two simple-minded explanations and say "pick one?" That may substitute for debate where you come from but I can't help but believe that the origins of the universe are more complex than either random chance or random superstition.

Um, so where did God come from, anyway? Big bang I guess.
Actually, scientists have been trying to figure out how the first building blocks for what later became life could have occurred. I can't remember all of the ins and outs, but I know the thinking has evolved over time based on experiments of various kinds.
Science doesn't disprove or confirm the existence of God. Only a drooling idiot thinks unproven theories disprove the usefulness or truth uncovered by scientific inquiry.

Stupid Debate, nobody was around to see it so it can always be debated no matter what.
And IM with jim, you gave to basic choices for an extremely complex issue.

I prefer the Darwin version.
Who cares how things started? But the God version doesn't leave much room for the future. He had everything figured out.
On the other hand, Darwin gives you two choices:
1. wear gear and stay in the game
2. not wear gear and leave the gene pool voluntarily :-)

I've thought about this. Not about how to understand it but how to explain it to those who don't. More precisely to those with out technical background and who haven't traveled much in their lives nor gambled much.
OK so here it goes and I'll do my best here OK.
Time, what you and I experience in our entire lives is nothing. In fact all of human existence is nothing more than an instant in the history of the planet we call earth.
A little lost? Well......OK 4.5 billion years old...that's how old the earth is. Now ok I'll try to make things a little easier, about 65 million years ago those larger lizards that walked the earth died. Humans (walking apes) have been around at best for a million or so years. Are you getting what I'm getting at? OK take what you think is your idea of old and expanded it by oh say a billion and you are almost there.
Next probability, long before large multi celled creatures came to exist the world was full of warm oceans of stuff. Yes the earth was warm. Back then there was much more CO2 in the air and the earth was a very large poisonous green house. Something resembling Venus.
So to make things easier, think of a room full of Lego's. Except this room is the size of the earth and you are about 5 miles deep in parts. And all this is just swirling around non stop. Now if three key pieces fit together then you create amino acids which then can bond with each other which then will produce the basics of life.
Is your head spinning? Good because check this out. Every play roulette? What are the odds of getting one number? 1/37. What are the odds of getting the same number twice? 1/37*1/37=1369 Now three in a row? 1/50653! Small odds right? Almost zero right? Well sure if you bet 3 times. But what if you bet every second....better yet what if you had a billion tables all in play. And you were playing these tables all at the same time for say a billion years.
Well you can put all this in a very nice neat equation. Where by t=>infinity (hay whats a few million years among friends?)
Any how using basic math a bit of basic chemistry and knowing geology you will soon come to the very sad realization that at best we are nothing more than a probability.
Now is that bad? No. Not really it just means that we have to man up and start taking responsibility for our actions and not use the crutch of an invisible friend in the sky.
At worst? We evolved from alien shit.
As for Darwin....Darwing gave us the basic rules of the upper part of the program. He didn't have enough into to actually develope the base code. But not bad for a guy who took one trip and looked at the world with an openind.

I thought I'd be flamed instantly for even bringing this one up, thanks for proving me wrong.

Judging by some of your posts, I'm guessing being predictively judgemental is your personal downfall. Just sayin...
