You are serving in Iraq? Thank you. There is a distinction between the troops on the ground and the civilian leadership giving the orders. A co-worker is about to ship off to Basra for a year.
Yes, you are right, lots of Americans die from all kinds of things every year, and the numbers dwarf the casualties from Iraq. They also dwarf the casualties from 9/11. There is an underlying mortality rate for any population, including the military, so even if we pulled out of Iraq, our service people would still die in accidents. I don't see the point in sending our troops off to a place where their mortality rate will increase without thinking it through all the way. The leadership didn't think it through, didn't set realistic, achievable goals, and stick to them. The leadership didn't have a reason to invade Iraq, at least not one they are able to articulate clearly. Tex has it right, though. The neo-cons thought it would be a money maker. That's reprehensible, but it is the only reason that consistently bubbles to the top.
Another thing I have no dobut about is our troops are doing good things in Iraq, and the good is greater than the bad by a significant amount. They are American troops, and they achieve goals better than any other organization on the planet. There are undoubtedly Iraqis who are grateful to have us there, and in some places, I have no doubt our troops are a source of stability and support for the locals. In other places, our troops are viewed as another militia, and are a source of instability and the focus of violence.
Since you are there, I would be very happy to read your take on what is happening there, since I am sure we don't get comprehensive news or even accurate news from any source. Even all possible sources together is incomplete. Since Iraq is a political issue, I encourage anybody serving over there or who has served over there and has information they can report to post it. It won't change my opinion of the administration or its motives, but it sure would help clarify what I would like to see the next administration do.

+ as many as can be imagined! Thank you for serving your country. I'm sorry your top leadership has served you so poorly. We really need to hear from the folks with boots on the ground (in all areas of Iraq) to balance the blandishments coming from D.C.

And that, my friends is a page from the Neocon playbook...
Lives are trivial, they love us for showing them who's boss, and investing in Americans is foolish. The only thing missing is "I can tell you precisely what will happen if we leave, but no one can predict what will happen if we stay."
That playbook leads directly to massive defense spending, with only a tiny fraction of it spent on human assets.
And you just love to bitch whine and complain and moan about what goes on down here while coming back, over and over. Everything you say you've already said before, over and over. So what's the point of your "contribution?"
Trust me dude. No one misses you when you stomp off in a huff. Mostly, no one notices. So if you're not having a good time, leave like a man this time.
I am not missed!! My feelings are hurt now. I don't know where you get the idea that I bitch and whine. I was just commenting back to another pointless post. This forum is full of your whinny ass posts. You are assuming that I give a fuck about your opinion of me, and thats where you are dead wrong.

Because you know so much more about what is going on on the ground over there
I thought it was over when the dragged up Saddam through that manhole. I was actually elated to know that our troops would be coming home knowing that he was in custody.
It's Thursday, April 17, 2008. He was captured on Saturday, December 13, 2003. Who the fuck knows?

I was alluding to going after terrorist cells in Afghanistan. I hate to even say it as bushco has beat it to death and still holds it over our heads, but we needed to go after them. If any group attacks a sovereign country, and you can pursue that group, then you should. Not doing so will allow continual national security breaches. Where we are now lost is that we are no longer, nor have we been for a while, able or willing to pursue the responsible groups. We are now lost in Iraquagmire, which only has negative national security values.

It will be time to leave when we have a boat big enough to hold all the oil they have in the ground so we can bring it back over here and enjoy cheaper gas prices. Do you see my avatar? That thing costs a fucking fortune to fill up.

Amen! Apparently, for some people, it will be over when they're told it's over by GWB (or McCain, should he somehow be elected - God forbid...), or when very Iraqi is a clone of an Amuricun, with 2.5 kids, a house the the Bhagdad suburbs and an SUV, or when every "terrorist" (they get to define what that means on a daily basis) is dead. Since what constitutes victory in Iraq has never actually been clearly defined, we may never know when we've achieved it.
