Politics & ReligionWell Since every damn forum has one. Might as well leave it out there. This place is loosely moderated and should not be entered if you're weak of heart.
Maybe it's where I've lived and the people I've associated with, or maybe it's luck, or maybe I'm not the type of person to attract trouble, but I have never once in my life been so in fear of my life that I felt I needed a gun. I own a gun, but I've never needed it or felt I needed it. I've loaded out of plenty of clubs in sketchy places here in Seattle (including Scrutinizer's Pioneer Square) and no hairs ever prickled on the back of my neck.
Not that that means anything, it's probably just an accident of birth and upbringing, I don't know. Maybe I just don't have the right genes, but I don't live my life in that kind of creeping dread.

When reading about Hitler, Stalin, Mao, et al., there's a particular adage that rings true, "Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely." Don't think for a second that they'll stop at 2A. 1A, and 4A will soon follow. Then all the others.

Although as I have stated I feel there are more important issues, our constitutional liberties should never be taken away. I am an avid gun owner, simply because I can be. A liberty not exercised is one easily taken away. While I will not let a stance on this issue decide my vote for one cycle, if I notice a trend I could be swayed in a later cycle. I'm not worried about the outcome of this election affecting any of us, but agree that we should definitely keep an eye on this issue, as we would with any of our other 10A rights. They are all one and the same, and we cannot say it is fine to let one freedom wither and die as long as the others stay untouched. If you get an infection and amputate one finger, the whole hand is hand*icapped. Our current freedoms in regards to firearms are one thing I HOPE they don't CHANGE.

And I for one hope nothing ever happens to you. Do you have car/motorcycle insurance? Most do, we get it just in case something bad happens to us. Having a weapon to protect you is much like insurance, we have it but don't want to use it. But it's nice to know it's there.

Well said, especially extended to the entire Bill of Rights.

That extension is the most important part. The NRA would have us forget about the other rights, just as long as we can keep our firearms. I call BS on that. I'd rather have it the other way around. If all my other rights are well protected, I'm far less likely to actually NEED a personal firearm, though having one should be pretected, as well.

Its no surprise that the NRA doesn't care generally about rights. Those other ones simply aren't important to gun manufacturers so they won't be important to the NRA.

Funny thing. I bet the ACLU would step up to protect the constitutional right to bear arms if the NRA wasn't around. The NRA just makes personal firearms owners look like wildeyed, nutbags with an extreme and narrow agenda. The ACLU works for all the rights of people (not impersonal corporate entities).

It's too bad that you have that perception. There are certainly gun owners that fit that description, but by in large, that's not the common NRA member.
At any rate, I don't know why somebody would drag their feet over the coals on this. They have an agenda (shocking!). They're just like any other lobby group, be it the ABA (corporate banks), Million Mom March (anti-guns), AFL-CIO (labor).

True. But the NRA panders to the whole group dishonestly, not just the nutbags, and the rational, reasonable guy with a gun is really of no concern to anyone.

The ACLU supports the rights of Nazis to march through Jewish neighborhoods, even though the ACLU's lawyers are generally Jewish. They are certainly even handed and support the Bill of Rights better than anybody else. Whether you like the results or not is a different story, but you have to give them credit for being tireless. If the NRA wasn't rabidly defending gun rights, I have no doubt the ACLU would. I can proudly say I am a member, although the card is in a drawer somewhere.
