I have to honestly say, I am sick and friggin tired of people with skin pigmentation saying shit like "African American". If your particular history is from a country, then say THAT. i.e. "I'm Camaroonian American", or "I'm Nigerian American". Don't claim an entire friggin continent.

American culture is an amalgamation of the cultures and heritages of all the people that make up this country. Suggesting that there's no African influences in American culture is like suggesting the same for French influences in parts of Canada. I can say "French Canadian" because FRANCE is a country. I do not say "European Canadian", as Europe is a continent, as is AFRICA.

Native Americans are also "immigrants". There are no Homo Sapiens that claim North America as a place of "original" birth.

You point out a dilemma that many black people in the United States have. Because they were brought here from the continent of Africa, against their will, and not allowed to read or write or have gatherings with each other for hundreds of years, unless at the risk of being caught and whipped, raped, beat or killed, the majority AFRICAN AMERICANS in the United States cannot claim a specific country from which they came. They simply do not know. Furthermore, they do not have the resources of Oprah to trace their lineage to a specific country. As such, they identify with the continent from which they came. They do not have the ability to identify themselves as Italian American, because their grandfather Stefano did not come of his own will directly from Italy. They have nothing but the continent of Africa to claim.
Why are you sick of someone trying to identify with the only heritage they can trace? Why do you blame someone for taking pride in being from an entire continent instead of a specific country? Did you seriously not consider that it is next to impossible for an African American to claim rights to a specific country? I'm going to guess ignorance, but that would be giving you the benefit of the doubt.

Many of you are too young to remember, but there have been distinct periods in history when large segments of the population felt this hope that Mrs. Obama is referring to. Specifically, during the Kennedy admistration and the civil rights movement including Martin Luther King, Jr.

3rd--If your lineage cannot be determined because you have been in America for five generations, wouldn't your lineage be American? Why would it be African? My Dad was born in Scotland, I was born in Canada; Therefor I am Canadian. Not Scottish, nor Scottish Canadian.

Say what you want, but that continent is a shit hole for the most part. I find it funny how people hold such high esteem for the country of their ancestors, yet find everything there is to complain about the US despite its unquestionable superiority. That goes for our southern border too.

I know a lot of people who are very proud of their ethnic background - Irish and Italians to name a couple. And one need not come from a 100% ethnic bloodline to feel this pride. This pride doesn't make people any less loyal Americans.

She never said she was ashamed. You are insinuating that, but it was never said. Regardless, what's wrong with someone who is able to be critical of their government? What's wrong with someone who recognizes the flaws in a system, and is hopeful that things can get better?
Good point , i have an older friend and co worker,a black vietnam vet. Man is drafted goes to serve his country gets shot in the face while in country. Left with an injury that disfigures him for life. Now when he gets home there arer still places he cant go, becuse they dont serve niggers. This is the thanx he gets. Now its no stretch of the imagination to think that his opinion of his nation might be different than say some visa gold card carrying frat guy
