How can you bear to live in a country that you are ashamed of?
She never said she was ashamed. You are insinuating that, but it was never said. Regardless, what's wrong with someone who is able to be critical of their government? What's wrong with someone who recognizes the flaws in a system, and is hopeful that things can get better?

As is typical, the same ones complaining about her, also complain about the government and aren't particularly proud either.

You don't think African is part of the American culture?
Oh, I very much think Africa is part of American culture, that is not what I was saying. This is one of the points directly from the page.
" 4. A congregation with a non-negotiable COMMITMENT TO AFRICA."
Having a commitment to the culture of your forefathers is one thing, having a commitment to a different nation while wishing to rule the one you live in is another.
Here is another quote from their page..
"We are an African people, and remain "true to our native land," the mother continent, the cradle of civilization."
If Obama wishes to be African, he can goto Africa and be African. I'd have less trouble with their "mission statement" if it were to say "We are an African-American people"
I don't think Michelle Obama is "nuts". She's voicing her opinion. She's "proud of her country for the first time". So I guess that implies that she was unhappy or dissatisfied prior to this time? What's the big fucking deal?
That is exactly how I read it and it just pains me even more that this might be the next first family.
I doubt that Obama is any more committed to Africa than most Catholics are to the Vatican or that Notre Dame fans are to Ireland.
I also have no doubt that if some news organization were silly enough to question him about his loyalty to the United States versus Africa that he would have a reasoned and plausible response that SHOULD put this nonsense to rest. But I doubt it would for those of you who want to believe his loyalties lie elsewhere.

Well, it doesn't *pain* me. I guess it's her opinion. And she's entitled to it. I don't feel the same as her. But I'm also not going to use this as a linchpin.
Her husband's policies and voting record are more egregious than her remarks.
The latest I've heard is that it seems FOX edited out a word before proud that kinda changes the point of her statement. We already know that they failed to show the finishing of the statement (that also makes this whole thread moot.)
I've heard you can find it on YouTube. I don't have firsthand knowledge.
Tell me, where is the reference to unhappiness with the government in her speech?

She is saying that she has not been proud to be an American. Not because of the government, but because of the people. Now that people agree with her/her husband, she is proud to be among us. I don't know about anyone else, but I have always been proud to be an American, for more ways than anyone could ever list (and it's not because of what the government does or does not do).
Call me crazy, but I don't think there is a middle ground here. Either you are proud of your country, or you are not proud of your country (read: ashamed). I don't understand how anyone can be indifferent, unless you are uneducated. "Oh, America is just as good as any other country."
