Discussion: Roman Empire vs. United States
The Roman Empire lasted over 2200 years (752 BC- 1476 AD) before its downfall.
The United States has been in existance for a much shorter time.
With crime, drugs, inflation, pollution, ememies, education, immigration and so on and so on, will we make it 2000 years or are we doomed before then???

I think this thread belongs in the political, religion thread.
i agree, keep it in open forums. its not about religion or politics. I'm not confident about the usa right now but hope we do make it. I think I may start investing in precious metals once the bills are paid. Buy some gold, silver and platinum. I need to start stocking up on water and food also. Were in a major drought in our area. I have a well so I should be good but people on city water are screwed right now. I need to keep up on having ammo too...i usually go out back and shoot whatever I have lol.

I am not to sure we will make it another 50 years. The system of checks and balances failed years ago. We all point to other countries and say how corrupt they are, without keeping an eye on our own country. The Justice system is a joke, congress is the home to some of the biggest criminals around, and we are all being conditioned care about any other place but here.
We have no sense of what we are anymore, as more and more people funnel into the country, and do not even try to adopt our culture. We have whole towns that do not speak or read english, and even our own government will not make english our national language.
In 2200 years the world will likely be ruled by one big counsel with representatives from each country. Much like our governement today in the U.S. And, btw English will be the International language because "Money talks and bullshit walks" and we all know people who speak english have the most money.
Rome didn't become the "Empire" until after Julius Caesar was assasinated - or maybe when Caesar was made perpetual Dictator, I guess that little detail is debatable. It was a Republic before then, and a Monarchy before becoming a Republic.

+1 To say that Rome was an empire for all it's history is misleadng. It didn't truly become the Empire until Octavius became the Emperor Augustus. He wanted to bring back the Republic but died - poisoned by his wife who wanted her son Tiberius to be Emperor after she got rid of all rivals according to Suetonius. The Empire lasted around 400 -500 years.
As to the point of the thread - yes the US is on the same path and it's not going to take nearly as long.
The problem is that we ought to be a republic. That's what our nation was founded on.
Not as an empire. If we continue to proliferate as an empire, you can count down the days until the end. Only a return to the republic roots will save us, IMHO.

That's kind of why I brought it up. Rome went through many upheavals in it's history. What we have (or what we aspire to) is more similar to their Republic stage, only not nearly as violent.
