I went to Des Moines, IA for christmas. I have some family there.
I tired to watch some TV... yea, it was impossible. One political ad, after another. Kind of felt like I was in the USSR watching propaganda films on how the USA is "bad".
I'm really sorry because I'm sure this is a dumb question and will make me look completely ignorant, but what exactly does the caucus do and why do they have it? What exactly are people voting on?
Again, I'm sorry for the question. I asked around at work, but no one really knew the answer.

Basically the people of Iowa vote for who they like the best. And who ever is liked the most. Is sponsered by Iowa... It makes the news. Thats what really it.
A prretty good overview of the difference between a caucus and a primary can be found here: >clicky<

And the Republicans and Democrats have different rules for the process too. At least from what I know. Which is barely more than a superficial understanding.

Fox News has announced Obama as the democratic winner, with Edwards and Clinton in a dead heat for second. My favorite comment of the night is when one of the political commentators said regardless of how you cut it, 2/3 of Iowa voters voted against Hillary by supporting Obama and Edwards instead. 51% of voters said that change was their primary basis for the candidate they voted for, and only 20% said experience was. Hillary has based her campaign on being more experienced, but it appears the Iowa caucus-goers aren't interested.

Communists in Iowa chose Obama. Edwards and Hillary don't matter at this point.
For all the Paul naysayers, he received nearly triple the votes of Rudy. Somehow McCain managed to pull ahead. I expect Thompson to pull out of the race within the next few days.
Seven beers = shitty typing skills.
Nothing like an Iowa caucus when you need an excuse to drink something with a high alcohol percentage and watch TV.
How often do the winners of a caucus like this actually become President? And how often do canidates at the bottom of the results become President? Is there any statistics like that out there?
This is the first time I have actually been interested in politics so I don't really know how much weight an event like this carries.

Eh, at this point it is to early to tell. There have been numerous cases where someone did not come in first in the early caucuses, but still got their parties nomination. Since this is the first formal voting, it is getting a lot of attention. Expect candidates to knuckle down even more and try and court voters to their side. This will be news for the next week as analysts and talking heads debate what this means.

Well, Jerry Falwell won Iowa in 2000. That should give you a good idea.
