Anybody here a Free State Project member or prospective member? If you are not familiar with this project, it's worth taking a look at if you are concerned about safeguarding your personal freedoms and liberties, Free State Project - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
Considering the proximity to Massachusetts, I'm considering joining. Can anyone sell me either way?
My wife and I are members, have been since 2003. We are planning to move next summer. I think it is a fantastic idea, and am really looking forward to the chance to try to build the first genuinely liberty-minded society since before the Industrial Revolution.
We have been there to look at real estate and other considerations. I am one of the moderators of the official FSP discussion list. It is a serious effort that I truly believe will have an important effect.
Most of the issues that affect your freedom are addressable at the state level. States do still have an extremely high level of legal autonomy, if they have the guts to assert themselves.
To answer your question, no the move is not enforceable, and we wouldn't want it to be. We want people who *want* to come and participate; unwilling movers would be useless at best. So we do encourage any prospective member to think about it and be serious before signing up. The idea is to have enough people show up to make a real difference, so when you put your name there, others are counting on you being real. But if you are real, and you do believe in actual human liberty, we could use you.

Thanks for the detailed response. Of course the other half would rather stay in southern New England, but I'm trying to win her over.
Of course I'm doubly interested considering the scope and purpose of the project, but it takes on added meaning since the physical location is in close proximity to where I'm currently located.
In your experience, have others tried to find new jobs and homes prior to listing for the move?
I think this is a great idea. I think all you selfish guys should go try out the idea of Selfish Utopia. I can't wait to see how it works. Sacrificing New Hampshire seems worth it.
And FYI, Maryland is the Free State. You'll need to come up with another name.
Quote:
Free State. The nickname "Free State" was created by Hamilton Owens, editor of the Baltimore Sun. In 1923, Georgia Congressman William D. Upshaw, a firm supporter of Prohibition, denounced Maryland as a traitor to the Union for refusing to pass a State enforcement act. Mr. Owens thereupon wrote a mock-serious editorial entitled "The Maryland Free State," arguing that Maryland should secede from the Union rather than prohibit the sale of liquor. The irony in the editorial was subtle, and Mr. Owens decided not to print it. He popularized the nickname, however, in later editorials.
(But please, don't think that means you ought to make your Utopia here.)

Funny how those who promote freedom and liberty are labeled selfish, as opposed to those who try to oppress liberty for their own personal gain, or fears, or whatever other reason.

Yea, that's one theory. That's why I'm so glad you picked New Hampshire.

It's a natural reflex to disparage. I think psychologists label it as a defense mechanism.
