Holy Inflammatory Headline Batman!

But the victim was also punished for violating Saudi Arabia's laws on segregation that forbid unrelated men and women from associating with each other. She was initially sentenced to 90 lashes for being in the car of a strange man.
Yeah, a stupid law.
But the headline makes it sound like she was jailed for being raped, which wasn't the case.
I don't agree with it - but damn, that headline is misleading.

On appeal, the Arab News reported that the punishment was not reduced but increased to 200 lashes and a six-month prison sentence.
So...she gets whipped 200 times for being in a car with a male non relative????
After her 14 person gang rape?
Does their society have NO sense of compassion...or does it just hate all women?
I believe the law should apply to everyone...but we have judges in place to adjudicate the law and bring a human element to it. We recognize that in certain cases, the law may not serve justice unless it is applied with compassion and fairness.

Their original sentences were between 1 and 5 years as well for the rapists. It's safer to gang rape someone 14 times in Saudi Arabia than it is to have too much weed on you in the U.S.
Women are less than trash in many areas over there. At least trash doesn't necessarily deserve any respect. It's as if everyone was extremely paranoid that their woman was going to cheat on them to the point if they aren't with you or their brothers but any other man, they are jailed and or beaten. That's the actual law btw.

Who gives a shit? They also rip out their teenage daughters' clitorises.
"Female circumcision" is a practice that is all too common in both the middle east and Africa.
When I wonder to myself if there is a god....I think of things like this and I come to the conclusion that either there is no god, or he is a cruel bastard.

God is not necessarily cruel. People use God to do despicable things. This is one of them; to mutilate their daughters do "suppress" their sexual desires, and often times, killing them in the process.
Another reason to pay no mind, no debate on an area that clearly wants to remain as a vestige of our barbaric, uncivilized past.

Theologically (at least for Judeo-Christianity) the idea is that God gave humanity the choice to live under his protection and guidance or to exercise free will and take the consequences. Adam and Eve (under the temptation of Satan) chose free will, and God has (more or less) respected that. So the concept is that God is neither necessarily cruel nor non-existent, but that He has, at our request, adopted a "hands-off" policy, with only the individual option to return to Him after death if you so choose.
Personally, I don't believe in God. But the cruelties of the world are not the reason; those are adequately theologically explained (even if not very many people - religious or not - know the explanation any more).

Well said. Just as you are responsible for your actions and would not blame God for "letting you" or "making you" steal that car, break in to that house, cheap on your wife, etc.; it isn't "fair" to say it's God's fault for "letting" other people do horribly cruel things. Maybe a better way to look at it is if it's so terrible what are you doing to fix it? Then it gets a little tougher.
