Clay County Woman Dies After Being Shocked By Taser Gun - Local/Florida News Story - WJXT Jacksonville

http://www.firstcoastnews.com/news/t...?storyid=91565

well the coroner labled it as a homicide?

I seen a recent video where a mentally disturbed guy was tased 3 times by a female officer. The guy was attacking her each time the electric current was turned off and he beat the hell out of that officer. It took 2 very large male and another taser weapon to get the suspect under control.

The coroner can only list certain things on a death certificate. Most times it reads "natural cases" "death by traffic collision" or something along those lines. They mark homicide if a person dies at the hands of another, if it was so cut and dry then the coroner would have simply wrote "Murdered" on the death certificate wouldn't they? Don't read too much into the "official cause of death" on a death certificate.

I mean with such an odd situation I would think the police would say ok we need a game plan here before we go at this woman, not ok we're here let's just taz the shit out of her !

It's protocol. Officers are required to use what is known as a force continuem. Basically the amount of force they are permitted to use. In that system and how it is written, their policy may have been to use a Taser before chemical sprays and impact weapons are permitted. To be honest, they used a lot of restraint. If this lady had been able to use her legs, she probably would have been shot.

The officer may not have had enough time to formulate a better plan either. On a call, things can go from clam and easy going to an all out shit storm quickly!! Ask the officers that have walked up to a car on a traffic stop and as soon as they reach the window they get shot in the chest with a gun......on second thought, can't ask them because a lot of them are dead right now.

United States citizens are not your enemies. Good job.
I am a psych nurse who works with a myriad of people who have mental illnesses and I can attest to the fact that YEAH they can harm you. Yes they are dangerous and unpredictable and never assume a person in a wheelchair is incapable of great feats of strength or unable to stand, even if just for short periods of time.

I work with 70 and 80yo dementia/Alzheimer patients with assorted psychosis and any one of them can knock me out. I've been knocked on my butt or knocked off balance at least once per shift. Those of you who clearly have no experience working with people who have a (or several) mental illnesses really should not make assumption. I guarantee you would change your mind after just one 8 hour shift.

Just because it's a knife doesn't mean it's less harmful than a gun. A slice of a knife across an artery would mean certain death. I wouldn't say that what the officers did were right or wrong because I don't know all the facts. However, I would say that a knife-wielding schizophrenic woman on a wheelchair would be very scary, especially if I am responsible for protecting her safety as well as others around her.

7 years ago my dept. had an incident where a guy in a wheel chair was on main street hitting people with a baseball bat. 9 people were injured before officer were able to detain him. 3 years ago we worked a domestic assault case where a man in a wheel chair beat his wife with a leather belt, guess the bitch should have used he able legs to get out. In St. Paul, Minn. a male in a wheel chair with suicidal tendencies went into a mall armed with a large hunting knife cut several people before officers were finally able to subdue him. Should I go on?

In order to tip her over or jam up the spokes, that would require someone to be within arms reach to do so and even if successful that person is STILL ARMED WITH THE KNIVES!! They roll onto their back and you just gave them security as someone can not come up from behind them and they don't have to worry about that and only has to focus on 180 degrees.

The taser has replaced the mace at a lot of depts. and even it was used the person would still be armed with the knives and generally tend to end up slashing in all directions. Also, spray isn't very effective on people with mental abnormalities.

Tasers were definately the correct option in this case- at first. The mistake was made when the officers decided to continue to use them, after it was abundently clear after more than a minute of voltage that the woman was unrelenting in her resistance.

At that point, an intelligent officer would not continue to tase her. Call in more backup, find another method to disarm her. For christs sake, shes in a wheelchair, so she won't be fleeing from you- THINK instead of act!

But honestly, even though the LEO's made the wrong decision, it probably wasn't a decision that many people would have correctly made at the time. I just don't
